Russian literature

This is simply a collection of great Russian literary works - from Dostoevsky, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chehov (I may be missing an author or two) - in Russian. Yes, the text within is not in English, but in the original Russian form. I would recommend this anyone of mid to advanced level Russian proficiency, as on the margins of the texts it clarifies the meaning of many antiquated Russian words and phrases, and also provides a few definitions of some non-traditional words. These works are also much more beautiful to read in Russian than in English, however that may be a personal bias of mine. English translation tends to ruin most literature that has origins elsewhere. Either way, it is worth reading these authors in their original form if you have the ability.

This is great for the advanced student of the Russian language. I love the fact that they have vocabulary words in the margin, but they have less and less throughout the book, helping you to learn.

First published in 1924, Otto Rank's The Trauma of Birth took as its starting point a note that Freud added to his The Interpretation of Dreams : "Moreover, the act of birth is the first experience of anxiety, and thus the source and prototype of the affect of anxiety". Rank set out to identify "the ultimate biological basis of the psychical," the very "nucleus of the unconscious" (p. xxiii). For him this was the physical event of birth, whereby the infant passes from a state of perfectly contented union with the mother to a state of parlous separation via an oppressive experience of asphyxiation, constriction, confinement in the vaginal canal, and so on-all feelings recognizable in anxiety states of every kind. It was the struggle against this traumatic experience of birth, in Rank's account, that structured the fantasy life of the child, including the disavowal of the difference between the sexes, infantile sexual theories, and oedipal scenarios. Castration anxiety was a defensive derivative of the anxiety associated with the birth trauma.

Otto Rank (1884-1939), one of the most important figures in psychoanalysis, wrote several influential works on the mind, art, literature, and religion, including The Incest Theme in Literature and Legend and Psychology and the Soul, both published by Johns Hopkins. Gregory C. Richter, Ph.D., is a professor of German and linguistics at Truman State University. E. James Lieberman, M.D., is a practicing psychiatrist and a clinical professor of psychiatry at George Washington University. Richter and Lieberman previously translated Rank's Psychology and the Soul. Robert A. Segal, Ph.D., is a professor of religious studies at Lancaster University, and a renowned authority on mythology.

A key book in the history of psychotherapy

The Dover edition, now out of print, contains an introduction by E. James Lieberman*, biographer of Otto Rank (_Acts of Will_) and co-translator of Rank's _Psychology and the Soul_(1998). This work marks the break between Rank and Freud; written in 1924, it established the mother-child relationship as the central focus in human development. People forget that Freud's psychology was father-centered. Some critics feel that Rank exaggerated the birth trauma in the physical sense, but his thesis is about separation and individuation, now mainstream concepts (cf. Mahler, Bowlby, Erikson). Freud initially praised the book as the best thing since the invention of psychoanalysis--but then he backed away; in 1926 Rank left Vienna for Paris and then New York.

This little book has big ideas about our need to merge and the various ways we spend our lives defending against that original loss and its infinite repetitions throughout life. Rank, shunned by Freud, was a thinker of the top order, popularized by the brilliant Ernest Becker in the 70s, and well worth reading in his original form.

One of the greatest books on child development and trauma every penned. Rank was the secretary of Sigmund Freud who went on to become a great psychologist and thinker in his own right. Many of his ideas, expressed in this classic work, undermine those of his mentor Freud. Indeed the book caused the break between he and Freud. Rank's ideas also serve to undermine most of Jung's central concepts.

Some of Rank's ideas bear a resemblance to those of the philosopher Martin Heidegger, and he is certainly in the same league as Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, Arthur Janov, John Bowlby, Wilhelm Reich, George Groddeck, Boris Sidis, Erich Neumann and others who developed the ideas of Freud and Jung.

If you are new to Delphi *and* database programming, this book will ease you into some simple applications and provide a general overview of Delphi programming.Despite being a tad redundant in it's explantions, the authors manage to get enough useful information into this modestly sized volume. For more advanced Delphi database programmers that have all the standard texts (ie Henderson's, Swan's, Leif's et al) , 'Kick Ass Delphi...' provides some interesting peeks into the professional world of coding...

too good to be bad?

I received this book for an honest review.
Olivia is a good girl who is working for her step father's company the summer before heading off to college. Figuring she's getting a head start on others with an internship pre-college she's excited that is until she finds out who her boss will be. Kaleb is a womanizing bad boy tasked with a project as a way to show is father he can one day take over the company, the issue is he's not sure he ever wants to run the company. What he is sure of is he does want the hot little intern his father assigned him, the only issue? She's his step sister....
This was a fun quick little read. I enjoyed Kaleb attitude and controlling personality and Olivia is sweet and endearing. My criticisms is that there are editing issues and that the flow between some of the scenes was a little rough. This is not a standalone and is part one in a series.

This was a sexy, hot story - especially if you like those of the step-sibling variety. They are not my favorite stories but this one was pretty good overall. This is part one of a series so you will need to read more to get the whole story.

Wasn't to bad but it did seam to stop in a few places but other then that it was a good short part 1. Olivia worked her whole life to get into Yale but when the letter came she felt her whole life went down the drain, until her stepmother came and comfort her on her misery. Caleb is you typical bad boy/jock but being a son of a multi millionaire and the heir to the fortune and business he didn't want anything but the money. When his sister needs a comforting hand he didn't expect the response that he got from his body or the thoughts that starting to spring up. Olivia and Kaleb will discover their true feelings towards one another.

Loved Genevieve and Lewis's story!!

Excellent second book in this series by Jules. I really enjoyed getting to know both Genevieve and Lewis much better. The chemistry between them was off the charts when they met. That never changed. Genevieve got into some difficult situations, and somehow Lewis or a friend of his was always there to help her. I really liked that. Then there was the added challenge of Mira. That one was difficult, not just for Genevieve, but for Lewis as well. He just didn't know how much she interfered with his life until the one he really wanted walked away because of the situation. I don't blame Genevieve at all for that, in fact, I applaud her for finally standing up for herself. Something that she ended up doing a few times before the end of the book. Each time was better than the last. The ending was both good, and at the same time laid the foundation for the next book - I think. I loved how Genevieve's everything improved. Jules really made this quite easy to get lost in, and not want to find your way out. I can't wait for the third book!

Disappointing

I enjoyed the first book, so i was looking forward to this one, but I was disappointed.
It's not fresh, but rehashes the same timeline thru different eyes. Therefore, I am not interested in getting the 3rd book.
There was not enough personality shining thru for Gen like there was for Cali in the first book.
It has a slow start, kept dragging on until about the last 3rd of the book.

I am hooked on the Blue Series!

Blue Crush takes us to South Lake Tahoe and Blue Casino, settings introduced in Barnard's Deep Blue debut. In this book, the heroine is Gen (BF in previous book). Gen was very quiet and reserved in Deep Blue, but in Blue Crush comes into her own. She has lots of justifiable guy baggage, but her insta-lust w/ Lewis is hot hot hot, while her desire to avoid him is believable.

Lewis. Sigh. So. Effing. Hot. The paddle board scene? The training?

Drools...

Sorry.

Where was I???

Barnard heroes aren't angry, tatted up, bad boys. They are good guys. Good guys who know are to treat their ladies right. Very swoony and A+.

In the end, I really connected to Gen. The Mudder conflict was perfect and the obnoxious and downright awful sexual harassment at the Casino is well resolved.

Can't wait for Mira's book next.

In 1948, American polls rated Bing Crosby “the most admired man alive”, and it’s no surprise given how popular he was across every major form of entertainment during the decade. With a string of major hits, Crosby was the most popular singer in the country during that era, with classic songs like “White Christmas” helping pave the way for other singers as varied as Bob Hope, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. In fact, young Sinatra modeled his clothing and style after Crosby, who was his idol growing up. And as good as he was at singing, Crosby’s work with radio technology helped pave the way for multitracking songs and making it possible to broadcast the same radio programs across the country without cutting another live version. All told, Crosby sold an estimated 500 million records in the 20th century.
In addition to being one of America’s most beloved singers and an accomplished radio presence, Crosby not only made popular movies but acted well enough to be critically acclaimed. His Road To… movie series with Bob Hope produced some of the best-selling movies of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and he won an Oscar for Best Actor in Going My Way (1944) by playing Father Chuck O’Malley. When he was nominated for the same role in the 1945 sequel The Bells of St. Mary’s, he became one of just 4 people nominated for two Oscars for playing the same role.

Bing Crosby

I enjoyed the story about Bing Crosby. I met him, in Yuba City, outside of a coffee shop. He had a ranch somewhere close
that he used for hunting. He was driving an older station wagon and was dressed for the country. He signed his autograph
on an envelope that I had in my purse. He was not exceptionally warm and friendly, but not unfriendly. I think the only people
that would enjoy the book are older, like me. I am 82, The generation that was alive during his famous times.

I truly love this series and want to get every edition!! Very good biographies, no fluff, just the facts. Well written and usually around 50 pages so can be read all in one sitting. I always find something surprising about each person. I didn't know Bing Crosby was also involved in multitracking and radio technology.
I highly recommend all books in this series! You will not be disappointed!

Very bad scan of this book

Very bad scan of this book. Whole paragraphs are gone. Do not get the kindle edition. I had to give up reading it... every time I would get into the book a huge hole in the book would frustrate me beyond words.

Fascinating book. One of the great things about Kindle is the ability to go straight to the source. The author knew of what he wrote, as they say, and it comes through. It did not feel like a textbook. It felt real. Imagine trying to keep something like this in print all the time for the small handful of people who want to read about the Lenape? Impossible. And yet, electronically, it is always available.

A Good History of Lambik Beer

A well presented book on this unique type of beer. The book has unusual beer-colored splotches on most of the pages which in my opinion add to the mood of the book. The first part of the book describes the lambik, geuze (or should it be gueuze? - the book is silent on this matter) and fruit beer making / blending processes. The major part of the book details each lambik maker and geuze blender. The history of each family going back over 100 years is described in some detail. This is a good read and really enlightened me to this ancient beer which I have much enjoyed when previously in Belgium. Two small quibbles - the photos are almost ethereal in presentation but all lack captions - I think captions for at least some photos would have been instructive. Secondly whilst reading the details of each brewery / blender there are a few terms used which were not described in the first part of the book eg skimming kettles. Maybe the first part of the book on the making process needs to be slightly more detailed in order to get the most out of the main part of the book? Anyway this book is recommended to anyone interested in this style of beer.

Richly illustrated, and good information on breweries

If you are already familiar with technical aspects of lambic brewing and tasting, this book will offer you the chance of knowing in depth all lambic brewers and gueuze blenders in Belgium. It covers extensive information on the history of each producer and describes a few techical data on each, but the book as a whole lacks more technical information. Although there is a lot on specific brewers, there is too little general information on the styles covered, and almost nothing about the lambic brewing processes. The visual aspect of the book, however, is stunning, with a lot of beautiful and inspiring pictures taken on every brewer and blender. If you look for technical information, try "Wild brews", by Jeff Sparrow. However, if you are interested in knowing in depth specific brewers and blenders, this is a great reference.

Good tome on a mysterious beverage

This book gives a great history of not only lambic and gueuze, but of each brewer and blender dealing with such. A very good overview of the process is included. There are a few things I learned, but most of it was already known through exhaustive searches and researching myself. If you are coming to this book with just a brief understanding of lambic, you will pick up a great deal of knowledge. On the other hand, if you could write a research document on the subject, you might just pick this up to add to your collection of beer related books.

The only qualms that I have with the book is not in the content. Just minor gripes. The pages are really thick. I kept thinking I was skipping pages every time I turned the page. It feels like two pages stuck together. And each page looks like someone skimmed through it with dirty hands. I guess this is to give it a rustic, workbook, type feel to it. It is sometimes distracting, but not overly so. The content is great and is up to date, as of this writing.

Overall the book is awesome, chock full of great information. The above complaints do nothing to take away from the actual content and I cannot ding the overall rating for a few small quibbles that are just personal feelings. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone that knows nothing of the subject, or has a cursory knowledge and is eager to learn more. If you brew lambic already (you would be in the book if you did), it could be of use for just the history of the other brewers. Great book!
