A Good History of Lambik Beer

A well presented book on this unique type of beer. The book has unusual beer-colored splotches on most of the pages which in my opinion add to the mood of the book. The first part of the book describes the lambik, geuze (or should it be gueuze? - the book is silent on this matter) and fruit beer making / blending processes. The major part of the book details each lambik maker and geuze blender. The history of each family going back over 100 years is described in some detail. This is a good read and really enlightened me to this ancient beer which I have much enjoyed when previously in Belgium. Two small quibbles - the photos are almost ethereal in presentation but all lack captions - I think captions for at least some photos would have been instructive. Secondly whilst reading the details of each brewery / blender there are a few terms used which were not described in the first part of the book eg skimming kettles. Maybe the first part of the book on the making process needs to be slightly more detailed in order to get the most out of the main part of the book? Anyway this book is recommended to anyone interested in this style of beer.

Richly illustrated, and good information on breweries

If you are already familiar with technical aspects of lambic brewing and tasting, this book will offer you the chance of knowing in depth all lambic brewers and gueuze blenders in Belgium. It covers extensive information on the history of each producer and describes a few techical data on each, but the book as a whole lacks more technical information. Although there is a lot on specific brewers, there is too little general information on the styles covered, and almost nothing about the lambic brewing processes. The visual aspect of the book, however, is stunning, with a lot of beautiful and inspiring pictures taken on every brewer and blender. If you look for technical information, try "Wild brews", by Jeff Sparrow. However, if you are interested in knowing in depth specific brewers and blenders, this is a great reference.

Good tome on a mysterious beverage

This book gives a great history of not only lambic and gueuze, but of each brewer and blender dealing with such. A very good overview of the process is included. There are a few things I learned, but most of it was already known through exhaustive searches and researching myself. If you are coming to this book with just a brief understanding of lambic, you will pick up a great deal of knowledge. On the other hand, if you could write a research document on the subject, you might just pick this up to add to your collection of beer related books.
The only qualms that I have with the book is not in the content. Just minor gripes. The pages are really thick. I kept thinking I was skipping pages every time I turned the page. It feels like two pages stuck together. And each page looks like someone skimmed through it with dirty hands. I guess this is to give it a rustic, workbook, type feel to it. It is sometimes distracting, but not overly so. The content is great and is up to date, as of this writing.
Overall the book is awesome, chock full of great information. The above complaints do nothing to take away from the actual content and I cannot ding the overall rating for a few small quibbles that are just personal feelings. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone that knows nothing of the subject, or has a cursory knowledge and is eager to learn more. If you brew lambic already (you would be in the book if you did), it could be of use for just the history of the other brewers. Great book!
