Ever since we first met Harddrive way back in Slate, I’ve been wondering exactly what his role was within the series. We saw his easy way with the customers in his shop, and witnessed his patience with Andy as they worked their way through an afternoon of bike shopping. Both of those things gave me a sense that the man was good, and I believed he was a biker in the way it was intended to be. Hard and unyielding, but passionate about the scoots. He was not a metro-corporate motorcycle riding man who claimed the title of biker, Harddrive just WAS one, living the life.

Then in Gunny, the man surfaced again, unnamed, but I knew it was him. He’s the one who found the fork for the Vincent that Gunny was working on, only asking for a photo in payment. All about the scoots, man.

Finally, in Mason, I learned for certain that the Indian motorcycle Slate was so proud of had indeed once belonged to Mason. Full circle. Kinda like life. Like Erin would tell us, it was “Karma, baby.”

But, it wasn’t until Hoss when I for sure knew so much more of his story. When I learned that Dixie, my favorite bartender in the whole world, was his girl. That’s when Harddrive got underneath my skin, and had to work his way out and onto the page to give me peace.

So, here you go. This is Harddrive’s story, filled with so much loss and pain given through complicated misunderstandings, and him owning the decision every single day to not pick up that phone. Owning, and hating it, even as he believed he was doing the right thing.

Must read for RWMC lovers!!

A sweet edition to the Rebel Wayfarers MC series. I love getting the insight into the secondary characters, especially when we find they play a bigger part in the picture than we ever would have known before.

Harddrive is one of those men. My heart broke for him and I found myself tearing up more than once. And then my heart was bursting with joy and tears may have happened then too. I might just be an emotional mess during the holidays, but this one hit the spot for me.

A must for anyone who loves their Rebels.

I really enjoyed this short story. It kept my interest and I read it quickly. The only complaint I have is now I have to go back and get the first book and read them all because I want to learn about all the others. Great story, MariaLisa!

Easy to read and learn with.

I am a Board Certified Allergist/Immunologist and I bought the book to help me to solidify my knowledge of basic immunology.
Since the American Board of Allergy and Immunology only issues 10-year certification --and I took the exam the first time in 1991 -- I have to take a multiple choice recert exam soon. The book is helping me prepare by reviewing current basic Immunology in a very easy to understand (and therefore easy to REMEMBER) fashion.
The prose is not prosaic, it's fun! The writing describes the immune system's structure and functioning clearly and logically. It does an excellent job of tying everything together, which can be difficult with the expanding "octopus" of detail that comprises modern immunology.
I highly recommend this for physicians and students of medicine or immunology.

Fantastic; the perfect exposition of basic immunology

After slogging through Janeway's _Immunobiology_ and most of a course in immunology, I had memorized a lot of facts but still understood next to nothing about the overall "design" and operation of the immune system. I found _How the Immune System Works_ the perfect antidote to my existential ennui. I recommend it highly and wish there were similar books on other related subjects.

The main pleasure of this book is that it's very "why-oriented" - Sompayrac explains how each mechanism fits into the grand scheme of immunology. Another key innovation is that he points out areas of immunology that aren't well understood yet; that way, you can recognize them as gaps in the science at large rather than as gaps in your own understanding.

Other virtues include brevity, judicious omission of irrelevant detail (this book omits the customary table of 30-odd cytokines along with a list of the 10 or 15 actions of each, for example), and an engaging and readable style.

2006 UPDATE (ORIGINAL REVIEW WAS MAY, 2002): I'm so glad to see this book continuing to get great reviews. Having completed the rest of medical school, I can now say that this is the single highest-value text I encountered on any medical subject.

Keeping It As Simple As Possible

The immune system is distributed throughout the body, but can still usefully be viewed as singular. The body is always under threat from tiny invaders, and it is only the various parts of our immune system, working together, that makes it possible for us to repel them. Without it, we would be dead very quickly.
This book gives a good overview of the immune system, with enough detail to understand how the various cells and tissues do what they do. How does the system recognize invaders? How does it recognize self, and leave self alone? Why is foreign tissue rejected? How can the system go wrong? What is the role of the Major Histocompatibility Complex? How do we get immunity? The mechanisms cells use are molecular�protein, mostly�and the immune system is all about protein switches, detectors, and processors. The above questions and others are answered by invoking the protein mechanisms, and explaining how the cells of the immune system can do the magic that they do in recognizing and responding appropriately to the millions of different possible invaders, and why some parts of the system take longer than others to swing into action.
The only background you really need for this book is an intelligent layman�s interest in science. You should know what proteins are (chains of amino acids), more-or-less how DNA and RNA work, and the ability to follow a technical discussion. The book was written for medical students, but knowledge of anatomy and physiology is not put to use here. The discussion is chatty, informal, and repetitive. Each of the first several chapters ends in a summary diagram of the system interactions that have been discussed up to that point, and each next chapter begins by giving an extensive review of the previous one.
In spite of this, the exposition is confusing. The author is doing what he can, but the immune system is inherently difficult to follow. It consists of many sloppy loops that interact with each other in approximate and varying ways. Moreover, certain important interactions are still not understood very well (as the author emphasizes), so there is some fuzziness in the picture. But the last two chapters, on auto-immune diseases and cancer, use what went before, and give the reader some perspective on the general mechanisms.
This is a satisfying book, and a real service. It is bringing together knowledge that otherwise would be scattered in research papers, or buried in technical books, and making it accessible. The level is low enough to explain the mechanisms, but leaves out much messiness that clinicians would probably need. No one would feel when they had finished only this book that they could treat an immune system disorder, but they would at least feel that they could comprehend it.

About the Author

Clelia Falletti is Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Since 1981 she has participated in research by ISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology) directed by Eugenio Barba; she is dramaturg for Teatro Potlach, and co-editor of theatre books series with two Italian publishing houses.
Gabriele Sofia teaches theatre studies and physical theatre at Paul Val�ry University, Montpellier, France. Since 2006 he has carried out an interdisciplinary research project on the neurophysiology of the actor and the spectator between the Sapienza University of Rome and the Maisons des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord. From 2009 to 2013 he promoted and organized five editions of the International Conference “Dialogues between Theatre and Neuroscience” at Sapienza.
Victor Jacono, PhD in Performance Studies, teaches at the MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts and Drama at the Alternative Learning Program, Malta.

Gems of Gold to Grab On the Run

Great "little" book. I like his books and how he writes. You can pick it up and read a quick page or two and apply it to your life that day. I refer to it often and like having the reminders to be positive to touch people's lives in a positive way. Gitomer shares "attitude gems" that he says are mental snacks to chew on and digest. He quotes and suggests books by many authors and encourages the reader to read at least two pages (15 minutes is his amount of time) of a positive book every day. Nothing is a new revelation in the book, but to help anyone be more positive, more consistent, more productive, solve problems better, and reach goals while being happier, I suggest reading this little book.

This is amazing...

This books really makes a stand for a positive attitude. If you've been in sales for a couple of years you already know that it's emperative. We can all remember how we made sale after sale when we had it. And we can all remember when it looked like the universe had a beef with us, and how negative or attitude was at that time. For me this book couldn't have arrived at a better time. I have been struggling for months now after I've decided to try a new direction in my sales career. Now I'm on the eve of anew challenge and I will suceed, no matter what. I owe it to the person I could become.

Thx for your wisdom and at times even funny deliverence. Thx for believing in us to share this wisdom with us. Jeffrey Gitomer you are somebody I admire.

Your very own life coach

I'm not sure how I discovered this little gem, but I was obviously in the mood for something upbeat - and that's what this book delivers. Gitomer isn't all that different from thousands of self-help authors that have come before him. He even gives away the secret of his success on page 8 when he tells the reader that he has 982 books on positive mental attitude and personal development in his own library.

There's little doubt that everything in this Gitomer book can be found in one or more of the books in his library. But here's the difference: Gitomer is a showman, a one-man revue of positive thinking. Every page sparkles with the force of Gitomer's personality and his relentless (if ancient) message: you are what you think.

You can dip in anywhere and come up with a handful of bright, shining attitudinal nuggets to carry you through a bad moment, a bad day, maybe even a bad year. He intersperses quotations from self-help classics with his own kind of homespun advice. Some of it just plain corny: "If you think I'm nuts, you may be right. But I'm a nut with a positive attitude, baby." And does it ever show.

In a hundred years, there will probably be no mention of Jeffrey Gitomer in any history books. Maybe not even in twenty years. But the guy is definitely in the "now". An effective self-promoter of his own self-help regimen, sales consultancy and a bunch of other businesses. He claims to deliver more than 120 live seminars a year. I think he'd be a treat to see: I get the idea that he could light up a string of Christmas tree lights with his own energy.

In any event, the "Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude" is a handy thing for your desk. Pull it out whenever you need a little does of attitude improvement.
