My kids love this book

My 9 year old daughter bought this in a gift shop at Disney world. As you can imagine it cost far more than the price posted here on Amazon. It is now a favorite book; my son is 7 and is equally enamored with it. They love all the little tidbits of information about the Disney villas and their childhood/ younger days. It is fun to read the background stories that have contributed to their becoming villains. There are many fold out pictures adding even more interest to this book. If your kids like anything Disney they will love this book.

I bought this book for my son, but I enjoyed it more than he did! I guess it was too much detail for a 5 yr old to handle, but overall , this book is great, just like the other villain books I bought, they lack a lot of the latest disney villain characters.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and loves this book. She is a princess fanatic but somehow has gotten interested in the villians. She looks at it everyday. I think it really is for an older child but she enjoys it anyway. It has many neat features that make it interactive.

Increased score by almost 30 points!

I purchased this book for my daughter who wanted to join the Navy. She took an ASVAB pretest and did okay, but knew she needed a higher score for the job she wanted in the service. The review book is huge, more than what she could cover in the time she had. Instead she focused on the subject matter that her recruiter told her were important for the desired job. When she took the test she raised her score 29 points. Her recruiter was very pleased and wanted to know what book she had studied from so he could recommend it to others who would be taking the ASVAB.

Misprints, inaccurate questions

I bought this book to study for the asvab, and while it contains a lot of information, I have noticed more than one error on the questions versus the answer provided. For example, on page 296 question 2, the question asks about a 60 ohm resistance, while on page 298, the answer states that the question asked for 60 kilo-ohms. I also noticed misprints like this in the diagnostic test.

Adult males are typically half or less the shell length of adult females, making map turtles and sawbacks the champions of sexual dimorphism among not only turtles but all four-legged vertebrates.

Aesthetics also draw biologists and hobbyists to map turtles and sawbacks. While the male Sabine map turtle may look to some like a “pencil-necked geek,” as the author puts it, markings on the shell, limbs, head, and neck make map turtles among the most attractive turtles on earth. Sawbacks feature a striking ridge down their shell. Few turtles show themselves off to such advantage. Photographs included here of Graptemys basking poses reveal to what improbable heights these turtles can scale, the spread-eagle sunning stances they adopt, the stacking of individuals on a crowded site, and the heads that warily watch the world above the waterline.

In lively prose, Lindeman details the habitat, diet, reproduction and life history, natural history, and population abundance of each species. A section on conservation status summarizes official state, federal, and international designations for each species, along with efforts toward population management and recovery as well as habitat preservation. The author also outlines promising avenues for future research, ranging from the effects of global climate change on populations to strategies for combating expansion of the pet trade.

Peter Lindeman has produced a work that is both interesting as well as in depth. The American map turtles are a beautiful and unique part of our rivers and this new atlas contains more information about them than anything ever published before.
This book will remain the number one reference on map turtles for many years to come. I highly recommend it.

When this book first appeared in 2013 I wondered how much information on map turtles it could possibly have that was not already covered in the 72 pages on Graptemys in the colossal volume “Turtles of the United States and Canada, 2nd Edition” (Ernst and Lovich. 2009. John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore. 827 pp.)? The Map Turtle and Sawback Atlas is an excellent book with 460 pages containing a wealth of new information on these exceptionally beautiful turtles. The text is well written and comprehensive. The maps delimit state and county boundaries with relevant rivers illustrated in blue and dots for locality records, unfortunately museum specimens are not identified. One of the few criticisms I have is that there are no synonymies, not even a basic checklist of map turtles with the authors of the species and dates of publications, although “taxonomic history” is discussed in each of the species accounts. This is another volume in the “Animal Natural History Series” from the University of Oklahoma Press which has published a number of fine books on North American herpetofauna, however like most of the books in the series, the color photographs are often very small and sometimes of poor quality (no doubt a criticism for the editors and publisher and not the authors). Although this book leans slightly to the science/technical side, I think there is much here that many armatures and hobbyist with interest for in-depth information on map turtles would find useful and accessible.

Nothing new here

This book is just your standard job search advice, with a series of tips grouped by topic (resumes, interviewing, networks), from career assessment (she only says that you should) to salary negotiation.

The majority of these tips tell you *what* to do but offer nothing on *how* to do it. For example, she says to "Use keywords," discussing their importance and where to use them, but doesn't offer any print or online resources or hints on how to do determine what those are. Some of the tips being unhelpful, unrealistic, or dated. (For example, most people are hip to what informational interviews really are, and for those in tech industries, print ads are probably the least effective way to find a job.)

It's like a skeleton of job search tips with no meat on the bones. I would have assumed by the title that there would be advice specific to a slumping job market. (Her advice? "Move.") Or that there would be advice on how to keep one's job through an acquisition or downsizing. With so many better books out there (Job Search Magic, Knock 'Em Dead, What Color Is Your Parachute, etc) on the generic topic of finding a job, I can't see why anyone would waste their time on this one.

About the Author
Vickie Bryant and Camille Hess have been friends for more than 30 years, and both married Baptist ministers who graduated from Bible Baptist Seminary. Bryant, an Ohio native, began an interest in the school’s history when her husband, Dr. David Bryant, was named president of the college. She started researching its colorful past and became founder and curator of the Top O’ Hill Collection. Hess, born and raised on Fort Worth’s North Side, has managed a medical office and owned an art gallery and antique shop. Currently, she enjoys assisting Bryant in her ongoing search for information.

Colorful local history

I actually found this book in a drug store as an impulse buy. I bought it for my husband who is a big history buff. I thought he would get a kick out of the story. It is a great book about local history and includes many interesting facts and pictures. I was vaguely aware of the sordid history of the Baptist college, but I had no idea that it was as famous as it was back in the day.
The only problem I had with the book was the price. It cost me 23.00 dollars. I thought that was a bit high for a small paperback. I have since found it on amazon for less that eleven dollars so I really don't understand the price gouging for the locals.

A Bible-based review by Don the Baptist of the text “Top O’ Hill Terrace” by Vickie Bryant and Camille Hess. I read the text in its entirety.

[Note: I obtained my copy of this work during a visit to the site. This is one of very few books which I own that did not – in some fashion – originate from Amazon.]

This book will appeal to a variety of readers. Baptists first, gambling historians next, and anyone interested in the history of some of Texas’ most colorful residents will likely be pleased by this work of history.

Weighing in at a scant 128 pages this text will take very little time to read, as the story is told largely by pictures. The pictures, on the other hand, are another matter. Considerable time may be spent reviewing the historic photographs and reading the accompanying text of each.

Having lived in Arlington, Texas, I am familiar with much of the history of the Top O’ Hill and the Arlington Baptist College (the current occupant of the Hill). I offer two brief stories/illustrations.

One particular event, not included in the text, is of Fred Browning himself, a casino owner with a heart. Upon one exceptionally dismal evening when “Lady-Luck” had simply abandoned one un-named gambler, said gambler saw fit to wager the family homestead. This too was promptly lost to the casino. As the story (or “legend” if you prefer) goes, Browning – in turn – deeded the home to the gambler’s wife, at no charge, and banned the gambler from ever returning to the Hill. Nonetheless, having a heart did not save Browning from dying penniless, and sadly, his wife suffered a similar fate.

Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

[Note: I am a Baptist evangelist. This will never change. Nonetheless, there is one curiosity that is somewhat uniquely Baptist to which I do not subscribe. None of this should be considered as a critique of the text; rather, the following comments are a critique of Baptists who subscribe to the particular ideology addressed.]

Compare the lower picture on page 97 of the ragged out old clunker trekking across the country to get to Bible-School with the pictures on pages 96, 101, 102, 109, etc. of the fresh-faced Bible-students all wearing suits and ties prepared to study God’s words. Can you imagine the surprise of the “clunker-pilot” and crew when they arrived at school and learn that they had to pony-up enough cash for suits, dress shirts, and shiny black shoes? Remember, they did not even have cash on-board for a jug of brake fluid.

In Honduras, my place of residence, I have preached redemption through the shed blood of Jesus Christ while I was wearing a dusty pull-over shirt. (I think they are called polo shirts, but I do not play polo, and I am not exactly sure what polo is.)

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is equally effective whether dressed in the best of Hugo Boss or the markdown bin at Walmart. Matthew 3:4, “And the same John [the Baptist] had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.” [brackets and insert added for clarity]

Nonetheless, I have digressed.

A text full of inspiration

This is my favorite book. Ever. And I'm an English teacher. I ordered it again to give to a student who was so struck by Rumi's poems when she borrowed my copy that she didn't give it back for months, and only reluctantly. I know there is a lot of criticism of Coleman Barks's translation, but I ONLY like his translations of Rumi. I've picked up other translators' work and just haven't felt the same love. Maybe that means I wouldn't actually like Rumi (although I've considered learning Persian just to find out), or maybe it's just that Barks brings alive the mystical quality, the opening to the universe, that--for me--characterizes Rumi's work and draws me to him. I first read this book in an ashram in India while conducting field work in college, and spent the better part of that day frantically scribbling quotations into a tattered notebook, only to later hunt down the book and buy my own copy when I returned home. That was almost 20 years ago, but my feeling of... connection... with the text has never gone away. I find that each time I open it, a different set of lines will speak to me, depending on my personal experience at the time; I can always find in this text exactly what I need to hear to re-inspire my sense of wonder at the universe.. I'm not Muslim myself, but I feel his vision of the world transcends such categories. In fact, that transcendence is the essence of Rumi, and Barks interprets that perfectly for me.

volume of Rumi's poetry. As poetry on its own it stands head and shoulders above most poetry written in the English language. That is saying a lot as English has produced some magnificent works both historically and
contemporarily. Rumi can easily be compared to Shakespeare in quality although their subject matter was quite different. Shakespeare of course dealt with egoic human nature while Rumi is more concerned with the mystical Spirit of all things. For the uninitiated some of the symbolism may take a while to understand but I think anyone who is considering this volume would be acquainted with such symbols as a door or a window or even the capital "K" King, or Friend as compared to friend. Although Rumi is 13th century Muslim many of his references are to the transcendent figures of Christianity. Many Christians may never have thought of the symbolic relationship of Jesus and his donkey but Rumi explains it very succinctly. Christianity of course has its own areas of mystical thought but for the most part have been banned by the Church as heretical simply because they erase the necessity of intermediaries between man and God, ie. the power structure of the priesthood. Look to the Gnostic Writings of the early church to see how similar they are to mystical thinking universally. Some of the words uttered by Jesus
in the Gnostic Gospels might seem quite incomprehensible to our modern, indoctrinated minds. Of course in mystical thought, of which Rumi is a paramount figure, man's approach to God is direct. "The Kingdom of Heaven is Within" and " To know one's Self is to know God " are but two basic examples.

Over and above the mystical thinking exemplified in this volume, it is highly erotic and at times, perhaps mainly to the Western mind, down right hilarious. Imagine a cook's responses to the objections of the chickpea in being boiled in water. The cook's responses turn out to be quite reasonable in themselves, not to mention the spiritual understanding involved.

It is no wonder that Rumi is the most read poet in America today (by children of the '60's?) and it is said that Coleman Bark's translations are much of the reason. I can not comment on that as I have only begun to read the work of other translators and am yet unable to intelligently compare and contrast but I will say that the translations of Coleman Bark have enabled a deep chord to be struck within me by this writer and poet in 13th century Farsi.

I would highly recommend this volume to anyone exploring the Spiritual, as I would also recommend this volume to anyone who either loves poetry itself or thinks of poetry only as something to be taken or left. If you are one of the latter it may introduce you to a whole new view of literary expression. As with most all poetry it does demand time of contemplation to fully grasp its beauty and meaning. Rumi will always occupy of place of importance in my library, non-fiction of course.
