A solid resource for students, scholars, and general readers, Historical Dictionary Of The Hittites is practical and easy-to-use, though many of the entry are the names of individual figures, or cities, or terms related to Hittite civilization and thus would be unfamiliar to the lay reader until he or she read the descriptive text.

Military in Politics

Professor McCoy has made hmself one of the handful of scholars with a deep understanding of fhe forces governing politics in a country of 70 million people who seem much easier to understand than others in Southeast Asia but who are influenced by Malay as well as Spanish and American customs and ideals. Today, as the Phililppine Armed Forces play another decisive role in their nation's history, this analysis is of immediate importance to those seeking to explore the role of armed, trained military leaders in countries whose democracies require support.

A cautionary tale

I bought the book because I was researching the acceptance of torture within an organizational or military context, and for that it's very useful -- and extremely well-written. However, as I read McCoy's inspired exploration of military socialization to either support civilian primacy and rule of law (at the cost of the soldiers' lives), or to disdain and despise civilian values and to become the law (at the cost of civilian lives), I was tremendously impressed.

He looks at how brutalization rather than civil socialization turns a military from our protectors to our terrorizers -- starting with harsh, degrading,even lethal hazing of cadets, on to ruthless interrogation of real enemies that creeps and then falls headlong into torture, then extra-legal detentions of civilian dissidents, then the torture and murder of civilians as a means of social repression and control, and with it coup attempts and martial law.

In this process, the military organization ceases to understand and obey the absolute requirement for great self-restraint by those who wield great firepower. It begins to believe its own prideful hype, and particularly in learning the unique potency of torture to destroy human will and rip apart the social fabric, the military begins to feel all-powerful. It no longer pledges allegiance to a nation or to democratic or broad social values, but becomes politicized and dedicated to protect only a few partisan values, or no values other than power and control for their own sake.

Read this book along with Mikey Weinstein's With God On Our Side, Scahill's Blackwater, and Lagouranis' Fear Up Harsh, and tell me you don't break into a cold sweat.

I may not be the first person to bring this matter about Mr. Alfred W. McCoy's book, particularly about the book cover. I do not know how authoritative he is about Philippine setting, but the display of the Philippine Flag on the book cover is WRONG. I have not read the book because I just chance upon it when I was browsing for another book. I hope this matter will be brought to the author's attention and that of the publisher as well. Reality Trumps Fantasy

For psychotherapists, like myself, who are persuaded that the reality of the of the actual forms of attachment that infants and toddlers have to their caregivers trumps psychoanalystic notions (e.g. Melanie Klein) that the child's internal fantasies are more determinative of healthy or pathological development, David Wallin's book will be a welcome tonic. He has engagingly described three paradigmatic deformations of attachment that lead to three kinds of character impairment -- the Dismissing Patient, the Preoccupied Patient and the Unresolved Patient, and provides stimulating vignettes from his practice to indicate the nature of what is wounded and damaged in each, followed by various kinds of interpretive diaglogues, and "ways of being" of the therapist that tend to foster constructive personality change. Finally, he is one of a growing number of psychotherapists to incorporate Buddhist teachings (particularly the use of mindfulness meditation) into his clinical practice with what appears to be encouraging results. His book is eminently readable and even when I disagreed with some of Dr. Wallin's ideas, they were always thought-provoking, and in the service of a more enlightened and effective psychotherapy.

Making therapy more human and vulnerable.

David Wallin has performed a great service for psychotherapists in his book. With insight and academic excellence he has filled in many of the blanks about how attachment theory applies in psychotherapy and how it can be applied within the therapeutic session. He explains the types of attachment clearly while giving directions on how to work with each type in therapy. His examples from his own work with clients gives the reader concrete understanding of the applications and implications of this work. In particular, Dr. Wallin clearly describes the interrelations and interconnectedness of therapist and client. He explains how this relationship can be the core of effective therapy as well as how to access the conscious and unconscious cues and understandings which make one a more effective helper. This is the story of how the therapist can deepen and use his or her sensitive understandings in a compassionate and effective manner for the client. I highly recommend this book for any therapist who wishes to be more effective in assisting clients to become personally empowered. The client learns how to create more internal, emotional space in order to use thoughts and feelings to create an effective and compassionate life.

Great for Patients, too!

Attachment in Psychotherapy is not just a book for psychotherapists--it is a wonderful book for patients as well. While it is clear that therapists would find this book of enormous value in their work, it is of importance for patients who want a better understanding of their own therapy. Dr. Wallin's review of the history of attachment theory is clear and provides a foundation for more recent work in this field. How we were parented (despite the best efforts of some loving parents) and how the effects of that early experience formed our adult styles of interaction lend important insights for understanding our struggles to feel good and function well in our lives. The concepts of thinking about your thoughts and being as aware of yourself as possible at any given moment are useful guides for patient and therapist.
The case presentations were interesting and illustrative with one limitation that I have found in many similar books--the patients often have histories that are so extreme that they are difficult to identify with. That said, they were valuable in increasing my sense of and comfort with a therapeutic relationship.
This is not an "easy" read, but a very worthwhile one. with understanding comes wisdom.

Updated Subjects Make it Even Better Than Original

This is the best book I've read on Christian ethics (though the Feinberg's book on the subject is a close second). I had read the original, but with the additional chapters and appendixes this is even better. Some of the new subjects include pornography,alcohol/drugs,general sexual morality,animal rights, environmental issues,birth control and gambling. Though some would consider ethics kind of a dry subject, there are passages in this book,that inspired me to live a more holy life,with practical application. Geisler speaks the truth in love. Highly recommended.

Norman Geisler does a great job of presenting various different philosophies and worldviews. Here, the reader will find the worldviews of Secular Humanism, Darwinian Evolution, Antinomianism, Situationism, Generalism, Unqualified Absolutism, and Conflicting Absolutism. The author addresses how these views affect one's basis for ethical decisions. The author then goes on to tackle abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, biomedical issues, capital punishment, war, sexuality, marriage, divorce, ecology, and animal rights. He presents fundamental biblical based answers to these issues. This book is ideal for any Christian who desires to go deeper in their understanding of current issues from a biblical worldview. It is not "lite" reading; however, it is very logical. Geisler presents in a systematic way which provides academic building blocks for the next point he makes and the conclusions he draws. I would recommend this book for any Christian who desires to give a reasonable defense of the Faith--being always ready to give an answer for the hope within.

Dr. Geisler's work is exceptionally well-researched, well-documented and well-written. His arguments are both powerfully supported and rationally coherent.

While his detailed, in-depth analyses of complex issues, and his introduction of numerous, abstruse concepts (such as emotivism, reconstructionism, selectivism and solipsism) might render the book more appropriate as a university textbook for use at the graduate, if not the undergraduate level, it nevertheless commends itself as an exceptional resource for those readers seeking a thorough, comprehensive, and up-to-date reference in the field of Christian ethics.

As arguably the most reasoned, comprehensive and authoritative, general text on Christian ethics to date, it speaks extensively to the world's current state of rampant and callous depravity. She then explores the process by which the Spaniards employed European male and female imageries to establish their own rule in Peru and to make new inroads on the power of native women, particularly poor peasant women.

Harassed economically and abused sexually, Andean women fought back, earning in the process the Spaniards' condemnation as "witches." Fresh from the European witch hunts that damned women for susceptibility to heresy and diabolic influence, Spanish clerics were predisposed to charge politically disruptive poor women with witchcraft. Professor Silverblatt shows that these very accusations provided women with an ideology of rebellion and a method for defending their culture.

Review of Moon, Sun and Witches

Irene Silverblatt examines the effects of the Spanish conquest on women's place in Peruvian society. In a straightforward and uncomplicated way, Silverblatt lays out the material using a basic `before and after' approach. She spends the first half describing pre-conquest Andean life, concentrating on women and their roles in society. Then she shows how life changed for the Andeans after the arrival of the Spanish. Again, she focuses on how those changes affected women, arguing that not only were women affected by the Spanish conquest but that they suffered far greater loss of position than their male counterparts.

An excellent, intricate and fascinating book

I first read this book in 1990, when I was a college student. It galvanized my interest in pan-American indigenous-white relations. Now that I am a university professor myself, I teach this book regularly. It's fascinating to most undergraduates -- often mentioned as one of their favorite books of the semester -- without losing any of the intricacy and delicacy of argument necessary to treating the subject of cultural contact and conflict in the Americas. I highly recommend it for any reader; I've given it to people travelling to Peru on vacation and it has greatly deepened their understanding of the land they are visiting and history of their own presence in the Sacred Valley. A great read, highly informative, elegantly written and deeply researched.

Not a great source of in-depth knowledge. The book is written from a secretarial perspective. Even as a handbook not very handy. More like instructions on performing clerical work than training and specific instructions on paralegal studies.

I was under the impression I would get document production advice, and really this book is a very general overview of Paralegal tasks. General knowledge that you learn through each of your Paralegal classes. This is not a handbook for you to reference by. DO NOT waste your money on this book. Very Dissappointed that my school book money went to no use.

Omar Santos is a Principal Engineer in the Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) part of Cisco’s Security Research and Operations. He mentors and leads engineers and incident managers during the investigation and resolution of security vulnerabilities in all Cisco products. Omar has been working with information technology and cyber security since the mid-1990s. Omar has designed, implemented, and supported numerous secure networks for Fortune 100 and 500 companies and for the U.S. government. Are you a network and security professional? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Omar Santos, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gets you started with managing network security, install and configure network security features to provide additional visibility.

Author Santos, begins by providing an overview of Cisco Netflow and IPFIX. Then, the author covers the different Cisco NetFlow v9 export format and packet details, and includes a detailed comparison between NetFlow and IPFIX. He continues by providing an introduction to Cisco's Flexible NetFlow; as well as, covering the Flexible NetFlow components and fields. Then, the author provides details about the top commercial NetFlow analyzers. He then describes how NetFlow is used for big data analytics for cyber security, along with other network telemetry capabilities, such as firewall logs, syslog, SNMP, and authentication, authorization and accounting logs; in addition to logs from routers and switches, servers, and endpoint stations, among others. Next, the author provides detailed coverage of the Cisco Cyber Threat Defense Solution. He continues by focusing on the different techniques and best practices that are available when troubleshooting NetFlow deployments and configurations. Finally, the author covers several case studies and real life scenarios on how NetFlow is deployed in large enterprises and in small and medium-sized businesses.

MUST HAVE RESOURCE FOR IT ADMINS!

This is a great primer on Flexible NetFlow and IPFIX for those who have minimal experience with either technology! Omar Santos explains with clear language the basics for Cisco's NetFlow and how it relates to the open-standard IPFIX as well as clear examples for usage. I appreciated the way the book took me from a basic overview for the technologies into practical implementations on a variety of platforms, from Cisco IOS, to NX-IOS and even ASA and IOS-XR. This is a resource for every administrator who needs useful tools and understanding for Big Data Analytics including basic CyberSecurity and commonly available tools to collect and analyze the data. Introducing basic troubleshooting for several platforms was a true bonus! While it is not designed to be the ultimate source for everything with analytics, this book is a valuable addition to any administrator's library.

Good Book for Two Great Tools

Imagine getting a book on some topic you love; say a book about “beer”. You relish the idea of reading all about this incredible beverage such as the different types of brew, its history, ingredients used, great breweries around the world, and so forth. Once the book arrives, the entire content is dedicated to one brand of beer and never once talks about how it tastes. Omar Santos pretty much accomplished this same feat with Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX .

First of all Dr. Santos has been quite busy pushing out books for Cisco. He just coauthored a book on security a few months back so he was probably very busy to put full effort into this book on Netflow. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Netwflow, it is probably one of the best network forensic tools ever created. That was the book I was expecting; one filled with all the different ways to use Netflow for forensic investigations and security of network traffic. Network forensic is very different from digital forensics because data is streaming across network devices at high speeds. Digital forensics usually involves locating static data off of evidence sitting right in front of you. They are two completely different fields with network forensics being incredibly advanced compared to the former.

Cisco created Netflow many years ago as a tool to collect data usage information for billing clients, locating bottlenecks, bandwidth scaling and basic tools normally associated with administrative tasks. Somewhere along the line somebody realized that Netflow can track much more useful information that can be used to recreate events, gather evidence of a crime, exonerate someone of a malicious act and help create logs for moving attacks to safer networks.

Netflow works on many devices besides Cisco so it is a tool that is usually installed as the network is created or when a savvy security administrator takes over a network. Basically, it is an essential tool in this line of work. Everyone thinks Wireshark is the bomb but Netflow works at a much higher level of traffic flow for filtering and collecting packets. I have nothing against Wireshark and use it on a regular basis yet Network is much more reasonable when you are dealing with terabytes of traffic per second on multiple connected devices.

Omar Santos does a good job of covering some of the open source tools like export protocols sFlow and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Both tools allow you to collect information about the data that crossed your network both inbound and outbound. As a security professional and a network forensic specialist, you rely on analytical tools to help you sort through all the hay to get to the needle.

As with all Cisco books, this one is very vendor oriented. Netflow is covered in all types of Cisco products ranging from ASA all the way to FireSIGHT Management Control Center. The different configurations are discussed in-depth which is nice if all your products are Cisco. Most organizations have a wide range of vendor products but at least you can use the configuration information as a map to help you understand your network devices. I was pretty impressed with the detailed information presented in the book but it kind of felt like a cheatsheet at certain points.

I love cheatsheets but I want them at the end of the book, not as the main content of a book. Mr. Santos covers a wide range of security uses for Netflow and IPFIX. I was expecting more information focused on the forensic abilities of these two incredible tools. There are multiple ways Omar shows the reader how to use the filtering aspects of these tools to make life easier. As with Wireshark, you gotta filter all that data or else you will lose your mind.

Both GUI and CLI are given equal discussion time in the book. We all know the real strength in any product is in the CLI, using switches and attributes to add power to commands. But we also know that sometimes we want to see what is happening to the thousands of packets we are examining.

Let’s face it: you would not but this book unless you knew the importance of these tools. The book does a great job of covering a wide range of the abilities of the tools. I was just expecting more specific details on network forensics. Because of my own expectations, I was a bit disappointed on the content. Maybe if I were a network guy, I’d be more impressed.

Netflow and IPFIX are two very different tools and have enormous capabilities if you know how to use them. Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX by Omar Santos is a good stab at all this complex information. These are not logging tools. If you are using them as logging tools than you are missing some serious heavy network help. If you want to learn about network forensics, this book is a good place to start.
