This book is written in a technical "how to" style interspersed with plenty of real life examples that effectively communicate the most important issues in building a successful accounting practice. I feel confident that reading this book is tantamount to studying the test answers before the exam.
The message is not flowery nor does it offer any easy answers, but focuses on the issues which you need to work hardest.

About the Author
Michael C. Munger is a Professor of Political Science and Economics and the Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics program at Duke University. He formerly served as a staff economist at the US Federal Trade Commission. He has published four books and has written for the American Journal of Political Science, the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Law and Economics, and the Journal of Politics. He was North American editor of Public Choice from 2006 to 2010 and is a past president of the Public Choice Society. He currently co-edits The Independent Review. Munger has won three teaching awards at Duke, and he gave the 2012 Toby Davis Lecture at George Mason University.

Kevin M. Munger is a PhD student in New York University's Department of Politics, focusing on comparative political economy. Munger spent a year as an investigator at La Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) in Santiago, Chile. He holds a degree in mathematics and economics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Putting the Science in Political Science

This pioneering work is a rigorous yet readable introduction to analytical political science – and by far the best of its type on the market. There’s pretense and posturing in the way some political science has evolved in recent decades, with ideology trumping objectivity, but that’s no part of this book, for it incorporates real science into political science.

"Choosing in Groups" has three main parts. Part I presents the basics of how decision-making occurs in groups, including how groups decide on the rules of the game (first deciding how to decide, at a constitutional level). Politics, according to the authors, is “constituted cooperative action” and “the practical process of group choice,” while “analytical politics is the study of choosing in groups.” Part I introduces the principles of valid deduction and inference, presents the essential elements of explanatory-mathematical models, addresses preference aggregation, examines moves from anarchy (state of nature) to systems of formal governance (civil society), discusses how majorities can rule without violating minority rights, and explains how utilities can be maximized consistent with the Pareto standard. Notable also in Part I are discussions of how democratic choice can yield outcomes at odds with the majority’s real preferences.

Part II is more technical, yet indispensable to the authors’ broad aim of conveying the real science of political science. The core of it entails explications, applications and extensions of spatial theory – first developed in the late 1950s by Anthony Downs and Duncan Black – which assigns electoral preferences along a continuum and shows how winning candidates and policies lay closest to the “ideal points” of electoral majorities. The section includes clear presentations and fresh insights on the Median Voter Theorem, issue salience, the prevalence of non-separable dimensions, the single-peakedness (or lack thereof) of preferences, and the stability (equilibrating) properties of majority rule.

Part III widens the analytical scope by examining “the social choice problem” more broadly-construed, first by treating Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem and discussing its implications for the legitimacy (or not) of majority rule – next by an analysis of voting and the information voters either have, don’t have, or don’t even bother to gather – and lastly, a robust examination of the dynamics of political competition, especially when voters’ preferences are uncertain.

Although "Choosing in Groups" offers value to the intelligent citizen wishing to bypass silly headlines and decode or predict deeper political trends, university professors especially will be wise (and thus appear wise, before their students) to adopt the book in introductory courses, given its comprehensive theoretical-analytical foundation. Very useful, but pretty advanced.

This book and DVD set is extremely useful for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it exposes readers to a variety of spoken English styles. The English speakers interviewed on the DVD have diverse accents that can be heard in all parts of the English speaking world. Moreover, the subject matter is highly relevant to students or businesspeople looking to live and/or work in an English speaking environment.
I would recommend that anyone using this book have at least an upper-intermediate understanding of English grammar. While the shorter interview excerpts may make sense to relatively lower level English speakers, a number of passages are lengthy and contain fairly difficult terminology. For any non-native English speaker looking to seriously improve their listening comprehension, I highly recommend this book.

She relates the science concepts she's introducing to scenarios that are in the everyday experience of young children; for example, when explaining lumens, or the units used to quantify brightness, she first discusses how temperature and length are measured. Readers will also enjoy the two easy experiments appended at the end. The colorful illustrations, created with pen and ink, watercolor, liquid acrylic, pencils, and pastels and which include children of diverse races, extend the text well and are marked by several appealing details, such as costumed children carrying glow sticks at Halloween and a glowing octopus. Another book in this series, Franklyn M. Branley's Day Light, Night Light: Where Light Comes From (HarperCollins, 1998), presents the concept of reflective light even more clearly than this title, but Pfeffer's text is shorter and features much more white space on each page, making it especially attractive for beginning readers.—Maralita L. So glad for new LRAFOS books!!

One of the things that I have discovered since using the Memoria Press Curriculum, especially their book lists for Social Studies & Science Resources is the Let's Read and Find Out Science series. We have started quite a collection and my girls really enjoy these. While not yet reading them on their own, they truly enjoy pouring over the illustrations and ask me questions so that I know their little brains are turning vying for information and learning.

When I saw a new one in the series, part of a The World Around Us sub-series, I was delighted to get my hands on an advanced copy for review. We have truly enjoyed these introduction to science topics and I look forward to new titles in the next Memoria Press Curriculum list. Now finally, HarperCollins is releasing new titles in this series. I'm delighted to read Light is All Around Us, a stage 2 book to explore more challenging concepts for children in the primary grades.

I truly enjoyed this book on light and I think it makes a great addition to our shelf. It discusses natural light to man-made light and animal chemical light in between. From light measured in lumens to how our eyes and brains receive and perceive light this little book, in a simple manner, covers a lot of information. Then at the end are a couple of experiments to bring the information to life in example.

Used this in a weekly STEAM-centered curriculum on Light & Shadow presented for, 'Family Inventors Lab' - geared towards 3 - 7 year olds. Kids loved it. Several parents asked for the title. I liked the illustrations and the way the subject was presented in the overall context.

I like the grouping of these titles, as they are among my favorite Miss Marple stories. "Murder at the Vicarage," the first, does well to set the stage for Miss Marple's environment and introduction. It is interesting that she is portrayed as the nosy, gossipy type to begin with, but not in future stories. She is more substantial as she goes along and commands respect of all ages and types, which an idle busybody wouldn't. "The Body in the Library" is very interesting as it brings the likable neighbor Dolly Bantry into the story. She shows up later in "The Mirror Crack'd," which is a welcome follow up on her. The relationship between the two women works well for reasoning out suspects. "The Moving Finger" takes Miss Marple to a friend's home and setting with another group of villagers and their unique circumstance. There is an attractive brother and sister team, who end up fitting in more than would be indicated at first. This is an eventful and absorbing story.

Jane Marple is my favorite Agatha Christie character though I love her others too. These are vintage, classic wonderful British murder mysteries and the "bundle" of 3 book for an amazingly low price was fabulous. Thankfully, nobody has yet decided to "rewrite and modernize" Ms. Christie's books. It would be almost a sacrilege to do that.

Miss Marple books win two out of three!

I'm a real Christie fan and especially love Miss Marple. Although I had seen The Body in the Library on TV, it was interesting to read it to learn what wasn't in the movie. Really enjoyed that one as well as The Murder at the Vicarage, but could not get into The Moving Finger. In that one we don't see Miss Marple until well into the book and frankly I just tired of the characters as they built the scene. But two our of three ain't bad for the price!
