Knox's translation solidly Catholic, and graceful and elegant
By Lance E. Goldsberry
Knox's translation is one of the best available. I regret that the whole bible is out of print. Although a very excellent Catholic bible, there is not any reason why all Christians will not enjoy this volume. When Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury recommended the Knox version when it came out, so it has some ecumenical appeal.
But it is a very good choice for orthodox and traditional Catholics, a great alternative to some modern translations.
First of all, it is doctrinally sound. Luke 1:28 translates "full of grace," rather than "highly favored"; the notes are worth the price of the book. Knox brings in many insights from the Church fathers and traditional Catholic teaching in his commentary, and in this way, his New Testament is a Catholic analog to the Orthodox Study Bible. His notes in Ephesians 6 point out that the battle armor imagery may be taken from Wisdom 5:19, showing one of the many allusions to the Deuterocanan in the New Testament. Unlike the NAB, Knox's notes support Catholic teaching on the Perpetual Virginity of Mary, purgatory and other Catholic distinctives, rather than undermine them.
The translation is somewhat free, but graceful and literary, a joy to read. Knox, a responsible scholar, and always calls the reader's attention to more literal renderings in his text when appropriate, as well as significant differences between the Greek and Latin text.
Along with the Douay Rheims, Confraternity version, and second Catholic RSV, this translation is highly recommended for orthodox and traditional Catholics.

A disappointment
By John Redmond
I was surprised and disappointed that Mgr. Knox employed such old fashioned diction and grammar in his translation. He was such an excellent stylist that I had looked forward to a very clear and graceful text.

This reader owns a copy of the Msgr Knox New Testament...
By Thomas E. Defreitas
...in one of its earlier printings, a Sheed & Ward paperback of 1954. Here is how Msgr Knox has rendered the "Nunc Dimittis," sung at Compline by monks (Luke 2.29-32):
"Ruler of all, now dost thou let thy servant go in peace, according to thy word;
"for my own eyes have seen that saving power of thine
"which thou hast prepared in the sight of all nations.
"This is the light which shall give revelation to the Gentiles, this is the glory of thy people Israel."
Knox's rendering of Matthew 6.28 ("See how the wild lilies grow; they do not toil or spin") is considerably more appealing to this reader than the New American Bible's "Learn a lesson from the way the wild flowers grow."
John 1:1, on the other hand, lacks the concision to which we are accustomed. "At the beginning of time the Word already was; and God had the word abiding with him, and the Word was God." The Revised English Bible of 1989 is similarly circumlocutory in its rendering of this verse.
But on the whole, the Ronald Knox New Testament is a dignified, stately, elegant and (as far as our unscholarly mind can discern) accurate translation; and we should like to see a single-volume reissuance of Msgr Knox's rendering of the Old Testament! Well, perhaps someday soon.
