Like living through a role playing session

This is a sequel (to elfshadow) but I don't think you have to know the predecessor to enjoy this book.
It's main characters are a female half-elf named Arilyn Moonblade, a not-as-stupid-as-he-seems human Danilo Thann, and a not-completely-evil elf named Elaith Craunobler (hope I got this right - grin).
I won't tell more about the plot (even if it IS good) since I found that what fascinated me most about this book is not the bare story but the many details around it.
For one lots of situations remind me on role-playing sessions with one big difference: the solutions which are found are simply more interesting than what often happens in role-playing sessions (it's not "we take our weapons and attack!!!").
Some details (like the riddle of the dragon) are simply ingenious. I wonder how someone can have such a vivid imagination!
Next I simply like the characters - all of them. Each and everyone has distinct features which lead to word-fencing and simply comical dialogs.
What some people might find missing is a certain kind of depth in the book. It is simply an enjoyable adventure, without dark corners or the possibility of death of one of its main characters in it. It is also not a saga style book (no complex background scenario and lots of interwoven plots.) If you want some darker, less adventure based book, try "A Game of Thrones" from George Martin.
Instead this book can be read in one fast sweep, like eating a good dessert.

A masterpiece, one of the best Forgotten Realms Novels ever.

Elaine Cunningham firmly takes her place among the best contemporary novelists with this book. Elfsong is a brilliant piece of literature that will challenge the readers mind and keep them guessing the whole way through. Readers will find it hard to put down, and even harder to keep themselves from skipping ahead to find out what happens! Filled with riddles and songs, even an encounter with a mighty dragon! It is the stuff classics are made of. This book is the sequel to Elfshadow, it beats it's predecessor by a longshot.

Arilyn Moonblade has won a place in my heart!

Definitely two of my all time favorites, Elfshadow and Elfsong, bring to life the story of Arilyn Moonblade, a half-elf Harper, and her adventures in the World of Faerun, as she tries to cope with her dual heritage and seeks to unlock the mysteries of her magical moonblade sword.
The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to the Forgotten Realms universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of both acquiring vast knowledge relevant to Faerun as well as presenting this material relating to the customs, the religion and the history of Toril, efficiently and successfully! Her solid grasp of factual detail makes her very capable of providing the necessary background needed to carry out the difficult task of writing Forgotten Realms novels, which is something often missing from the work of many Fantasy authors. Consequently, from the moment you pick up the books you have trouble putting them down and if that is not a clear sign of a fantastic writer/author who can come up with a great plot, I don't know what is!
Elves, spies, assassins, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about. Elfshadow and Elfsong make up for a great trilogy along with Silver Shadows and are a "must read" together with Evermeet, especially for all those who have a soft spot for everything Elven! In short, it's what Fantasy reading SHOULD be! One should seriously start thinking about turning these books into movies...

A solid foundation to a more Abundant Life

Dr Philip W Groves was one of the most profound spiritual teachers of the 20th century. Any of his books are well worth reading. Spiritual Foundations should be amongst the first to begin with, as there is a special clarity which I find remarkable.
To get an overview of what is covered, read the preface by Maery O’Connell, which is an excellent introduction to the book.
For those who are familiar with the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg, arguably the greatest spiritual explorer of the eighteenth century, this book is a diamond. Philip Groves has digested Swedenborg’s theological writings, and with the light of Higher Consciousness, makes Swedenborg’s deep insights more readily understandable in our scientific era. This is readily seen in how Dr Groves incorporates the language of correspondences into his teachings.

For those wishing to appreciate Life more deeply, this book will reveal some precious insights. For example, in chapter 2, ‘Soul, Mind and Body’ we read “the physical body coheres and functions as a unity while life is present, but it collapses and disintegrates as soon as life withdraws. Life is primarily in the soul and not the body, and the life of the soul is something very different from bodily existence. In the deeper states of surrendered relaxation there is the quite unmistakable experience of the inner reality of life as something completely removed from the customary sensations of ordinary awareness.”

A big plus, to help us grow spiritually are some practical tasks at the end of various chapters. For example, in the chapter on ‘Soul, Mind and Body’ we are reminded of the importance of examining our lives and placing ourselves under a Higher Power, confessing our mistakes, errors and sins, in order to experience the opening up of deeper spiritual resources. Dr Groves provides detailed practical help in this process of self-examination. And there are other practical tasks relating to Surrendered relaxation to the Divine; learning not to identify oneself with every mood, feeling, thought and circumstance that enters consciousness; and becoming familiar with the language of correspondences (the language of spirit).

So, read the extracts from chapter 1, Spiritual Foundations, and chapter 8, Regeneration, to see if you are drawn to the style and content. I think its amazing and I hope you will agree. And at the end, you will find a picture of this amazing man and a brief outline of his gifts and interests. His purpose in writing his books was to guide people into the abundance of life, (an abundance that he experienced), and developing a greater knowledge and understanding of the world we live in.

The idea for a visual dictionary of architecture evolved slowly over a number of years as I taught in the design studio, read books and articles, and confronted terms that were either new to me, were being used in sometimes contradictory ways, or simply tossed out with the assumption that everyone knew what they meant. And so I often asked myself what did these terms really mean?

Of course, there were already general dictionaries that supplied these meanings if one bothered to look them up, and for more discipline-specific terms, there were architectural, historical, and construction dictionaries available. But few had more than a smattering of illustrations. And since architecture is such a visual art, I believed there was a need for a truly visual dictionary. The few visual dictionaries that were available simply named various things and their constituent parts but neglected to supply definitions and meanings. So there was this void to be filled.

The initial phase of the project, of course, consisted of gathering essential architectural terms and their definitions from various sources. For many, I had to reference textbooks to more fully understand the meaning of a term and then to compose a concise yet accurate definition. At times, defining one term required including other terms embedded in the definition. This led to a natural nesting of terms into sets.

As I continued to compile terms and thought about the project, it became clear that I wanted to not only properly define architectural terms but also gather them in a way that related the terms to each other in a logical and hierarchical way, using both illustrations as well as relative positioning on a page to convey these relationships. So then the truly challenging and fun part of the project was to see how I could organize the terms in such a way that their groupings into sections and subsections made sense.

To do this, I started with fairly obvious divisions, such as design and structures. Once the fundamental term was defined, I then arranged related terms in a hierarchical fashion. For example, design can be defined both as a process and a product, which led to two different sections. In the case of structures, I began with the basic idea of a structure and related concepts that applied to all structures, regardless of material or scale. The second level of terms began with basic types of structural elements, such as arches and beams, and structural systems, such as frames and plate structures, each of which deserved its own section.

Historical terms created its own set of problems regarding inclusion and proper placement. While some terms may be considered obsolete, they remained, in my view, useful as points of reference or retained a certain charm.

Once I had identified the major sections of the dictionary and assigned each term to one of the sections, I imported them into Pagemaker and began laying out the terms and definitions on each page according to their relationships to each other.

I then printed the page out and laid tracing paper over the page and roughed out ideas for illustrations. In many cases, this necessitated moving some of the terms and their definitions around. I then did the final drawings for each page on a single sheet with leader lines and arrows. After these sheets of drawings were scanned, I placed the scans in Pagemaker and adjusted the terms and definitions further to fit. In this second edition, I used Photoshop to eliminate the leader lines and arrows and used the lines and arrows within InDesign. This gave me some leeway in the placement of the images.

It has been a pleasure to develop this second edition and I hope the spirit and flavor of the first edition endures the inclusion of current technology.

Overseas Edition

This is an oversees edition book if you look at the picture of the rear cover closely, it says "This edition authorized for sale in the Indian Sub-continent only" This was taped over when I received it, which is what made me suspicious. After going back and zooming in on the picture of the rear cover I saw this. I guess its my fault for not paying closer attention to this and the ISBN. But Maple_Leaf_Books should make this known in the description. They did however tell me they will give me a full refund of charges, I will update once I return it. I have no clue if this book is even close to the american edition or not, there is not even a page in the beginning that tells you a publication or copyright date. Elegant Simplicity and Mastery

A brilliantly conceived book. So simple, so direct, so thorough. Almost any idiot could have written it, but fortunately an idiot didn't. Frank Ching has mastery of presentation and elegant simplicity that sets him apart from the pack, and this is the very best of his work. I reference it often, and find myself just reading it for ideas and pleasure.

Excellent book, a MUST!!! Seller solved my problem.

My drafting teacher at college recommended me this book and it is really excellent, very useful and complete. It is a must for any interior design or architecture student. The item I ordered came with a torn page (the upper corner was missing) and I contacted the seller immediately and told him about the problem. He apologized and give me a credit for 1/2 the price of the book, so he solved the issue. I am very satisfied and would order from him again.

It doesn't get better folks - I can spend hours per page just absorbing the dense, yet clear construction drawings of Atelier Bow Wow. A must for any architect who thinks the current drawings standards we live by are the end-all. AIA, sit down and take a lesson, because you're about to get schooled.

Bow Wow not only has fascinating projects, but this book is presentation in a beautiful and unique method. Love that it goes back to the fundamentals of architecture: the drawings, but in a massively creative (and effective!) method.

great graphic and drawing techniques for architects

This is book is great for representational drawing techniques for architects but there is not much text explaining the firm or philosophy. 80% graphics 20% text. The book is most of their houses and it is all line drawings beginning with sectional perspectives with elevations and plans in the back. The layering of text, call out details and focusing particularly on how people use the spaces is great. There is a minimalist quality by using strictly line work and line weights but the layers of space make the drawings rich and complex.

Highly recommend.

Cade has made the #1 spot in my fav men of Sierra Cartwright!!! Whatever he pleases, I'm his completely!

I want to hate Sofia for getting the chance with Cade, but I can't hate her. She's a strong, independent and successful business woman who takes no s***. She knows her strength and has built her company from her mother's vision. She didn't had it easy, but never gives up. She's curious and willing to try with Cade.

Cade is a bastard child. A chip on his shoulder that keeps him hidden on the ranch he inheritated, along with some other demons that he thinks no one would understand. And old habits die hard when no one tries to break them.
It's Sofia who evokes feelings in him and yet he pushes her away when she tries to break his walls.
But it's also her that brings out his most dominant nature. Her curiousity awakes some fantasies and she's willing to fulfill them.

His kinks are so freaking hot that I was on fire more than once.

Their chemistry is strong right from the beginning and just gets stronger and stronger with every touch, with every bit of trust that is given freely.
Both characters are strong and you have an instant connection with them both. Their banter is so funny I had a couple of laugh out loud moments.
The story is hot and funny and sometimes heartbreaking.
Sierra Cartwright strikes again with her amazing writing!

LOVE CADE AND SUMMER

WOW! Brand may be my favorite of all of Sierra Cartwright's books.

I loved Cade and Sofia's story. They meet at Lara and Connor Donovan's wedding celebration. Sofia is an event planner and Cade Donovan is a cowboy who has a 100 year celebration to host, but didn't realize what he was getting himself into with this party.

The chemistry between these two is amazing and Cade Donovan is a Dom who know just how to push her. I could not put this book down and read it cover to cover. It is super hot and I can't wait to meet more of the Donovan Dynasty Series!

I am completely IN LOVE with CADE DONOVAN! That sexy cowboy can tie me up whenever he pleases! Sierra Cartwright gives us another sensual, passionate, and erotic romance in her fantastic DONOVAN DYNASTY series. I can never get enough of this author. Her writing is so addicting. Her characters are sexy and strong, and her storylines touch the heart. What more can you possibly ask for in this genre?

Cade and Sofia. Two very different characters that compliment each other so well. There is instant chemistry and smoldering heat between the two. One sassy event planner. One tortured gorgeous cowboy. Boom! You got yourself a unputdownable erotic romance!

The initial interaction between Cade and Sofia was HOT! They meet at another Donovan wedding. There is dancing and there is a dark corner where anything could happen. They part ways after just a taste and immediately they want more. Cade is in desperate need of Sofia’s services, event planning that is, and he will do just about anything to make that happen. They both have their demands for each other and the witty banter that ensues is so enjoyable to read.

With the ability to make listeners laugh out loud with her humor, get lumps in their throats with her poignancy and leave them thinking about her characters long after they've hit the stop button, Cisneros is a master storyteller and performer. Her sweeping tale of the Reyes family, with the charmingly innocent Lala Reyes at its center, moves from 1920s Mexico City and Acapulco to 1950s Chicago, all the while grounding the family's whimsical events with "notes" to help readers understand the greater significance of, say, a nightclub singer who snagged Lala's grandfather's heart or the Mexican government's initiative to build a network of highways throughout the country. Cisneros (The House on Mango Street) reads her flowing text in an often ebullient voice, recounting the sights and sounds of Mexico City's boisterous streets or performing one of the many grand-scale arguments Lala's parents have. Her voices are marvelous. She perfectly portrays the Awful Grandmother's bitterness (the old lady loved to remind her son, "Wives come and go, but mothers, you have only one!") and sweetly croons the birthday songs Lala and her brothers sing to their father. This is a treat of an audio, combining a fantastic narrative with an equally excellent reading.

Although lengthy, the book will appeal to many teens, particularly girls, because of its compelling coming-of-age theme and its array of eccentric, romantic characters. Celaya Reyes, called LaLa, is the youngest and the only girl among seven siblings. The book follows her from infancy to adolescence as she grows up in a noisy, disputatious, and loving clan of Mexican Americans struggling to be successful in the United States while remaining true to their cultural heritage. The Reyes's annual car journey from Chicago to Mexico City for a visit with the matriarch known as "The Awful Grandmother" is both a trial and a treat for LaLa. The imaginative and sensitive girl often feels lost within the family hilarity and histrionics, but she gradually forms an uneasy bond with her grandmother, inheriting from her the family stories, legends, and scandals. Eventually LaLa fashions these into a weave of "healthy lies" that chronicles the movements and adventures, both factual and imaginary, of several lively generations above and below the border. Her telling is a skillful blending of many narrative threads, creating a whole as colorful and charming as the heirloom striped shawl that gives the novel its title.

Exhibiting a humor that is at once Mexican, American, and Mexican-American, Sandra Cisneros tells the story of an immigrant family that is as universal and yet particular as these stories are. Lala Reyes is the seventh child of the family and the only girl. They live in Chicago, where her dad and his two brothers run an upholstery shop. There are cousins (my favorites are three brothers named Elvis, Byron, and Aristotle), looong caravan-style car trips to Mexico City to visit the Awful Grandmother, and some snooping into the past by Lala.
The Awful Grandmother was once a girl called Soledad, whose father was a dyer of rebozos, the traditional Mexican shawl, and whose mother was renowned for her intricate knotting of the fringes. All that remains of their art in the family is a rebozo with unfinished fringes, a caramelo, a shawl dyed in stripes the colors of caramel, licorice, and vanilla which appears around the shoulders of generations of women.
The plot winds and circles, often ending up in surprising places. "Caramelo" is a long book, but it could have been longer--many of the minor characters are unfinished and there's a sense that Cisneros had such a wealth of stories to tell that she simply could not stuff them all between these covers. The writing is so bright and fine I would have been happy to spend another hundred pages with the Reyes family.
My sole quibble with "Caramelo" is the extensive use of Spanish words and phrases. If readers do not speak Mexican Spanish, will they miss the full flavor of the novel? Would we be as willing to accept a book peppered with this much Hungarian or French? I would hate to think that some readers would find this a turn-off and feel excluded from Sandra Cisneros' rich and delightful story.

Ms. Cisneros ensnares the reader with her warm, wry humor

CARAMELO, the gorgeous new novel by Sandra Cisneros, begins with a portrait taken on a summer trip to Acapulco, one of those spontaneous group shots offered by photographers who comb the beach to record memories, real or manufactured. All of the members of the Reyes family are there...all except for Lala, the youngest, forgotten a few yards away as she happily makes sandcastles. And so Lala spends the rest of the book painting a portrait of her own.
It's impossible not to love an author who names her characters "the Awful Grandmother," "Aunty Light-Skin" and "Uncle Old." Cisneros's warm, wry humor has been on display since THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, and in her latest blended book (equal parts American and Mexican influence), she ensnares us again. This is Lala's story, first and foremost, but it's also the story of so many other things --- of growing up in two cultures, of growing up in general, of family life and daily upheaval, of class and racial strife. The Reyes family travels south to Mexico City each summer to spend time with Inocencio's parents, his heavy-handed mother and henpecked father. Thirteen running, screaming kids caught between the Chicago culture of their daily lives and the Mexican roots of their parents. Three daughters-in-law left to stew in their own juices when mama's around. One hundred reasons why, we soon learn, everything is not OK.
We watch things unfold through Lala's eyes, even the things she was not there to witness. She is an always-precocious narrator. Of Aunty Light-Skin's secretarial job, for example, we're told that she wears beautiful cocktail dresses and high heels, and is picked up each day by her big-shot boss. Lala overhears her mother and aunts' ridicule, but does not spell out the details. Readers can draw their own conclusions about Aunty's "profession." Our narrator admits her unreliability --- she remembers things that didn't happen, forgets some that did, and puts others into a different context. Of a disagreement with her mother, she pictures a dusky confrontation. But Lala knows it took place during the day.
Lala also guides us through history. She tells the Grandmother's story, how she became "Awful," before she became proud. She tells of her grandfather's great lost love, who was most certainly not her grandmother. She fills holes with her own romantic notions, adding details and drama where before there were none (in an amusing twist, the Awful Grandmother plays the interrupting listener, questioning Lala's every interpretation and insisting that her granddaughter play up the love story). Through Cisneros's beautiful prose, the Awful Grandmother becomes vulnerable: "It was dizzying to decide one's fate, because, to tell the truth, she'd never made any decision regarding her own life, but rather had floated and whirled about like a dry leaf in a swirl of foamy water."
When the Reyeses move from Chicago to San Antonio in Lala's 14th year, her life only becomes more complicated. So much the better for the reader. Cisneros's footnotes, explaining Mexican cultural references and character background, alone are worth the read. Lala endures the usual miserable adolescence, and Cisneros captures her petulant voice right down to the apostrophes: "The two guys in suits think we've stolen something. I mean, how do you like that? 'Cause we're teenagers, 'cause we're brown, 'cause we're not rich enough, right?"
Cisneros has said she began CARAMELO as a short story, but it kept growing. The semi-autobiographical work offers a lesson in Mexican history as well as in how to tell "healthy lies" --- the ones that don't hurt anyone. The significance of the title surfaces many times over. It's the color of the rebozo left to Lala when her grandmother dies; the skin of the servant girl who gives Lala a later-in-life epiphany; the mixed heritage of a Mexican-American family that remembers "a country I am homesick for, that doesn't exist anymore, that never existed." This fictional work of nonfiction turns out to be mainly fiction after all. Lala tells too many healthy lies to make it otherwise.
It's impossible not to compare Cisneros's multigenerational tale to THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS or ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE, but unlike Isabel Allende or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Cisneros's magic comes from actual realism. Each word is a brushstroke. Lala's story is one of construction, and truth, and consequence, but ultimately one of memory. As her grandfather is once told, "Remembering is the hand of god. I remember you, therefore I make you immortal." Just try not to remember Lala Reyes and her colorful family history. Cisneros has painted quite a picture.

Masterpiece!

Clearly, Sandra Cisneros is a genius! This is one of the best books I have ever read. The story is completely engaging and I really fell in love with the characters. The writing is out of this world, in a word it is exquisite. The story is a multi-generational tale of a family who is Mexican-American. I am attracted to books that tell a story of a culture I am unfamiliar with and then after reading such a book I am very interested in people of that culture. This is such a book. Along with that it is just a great, great read. Do not hesitate to get this book, and if you have a chance to see Sandra Cisneros at a reading do whatever you need to to get there, she is wonderful in person, funny, warm, and engaging. This book gets my highest recommendation! I am lucky to have read it.

Mastering jQuery Mobile framework is a must to web developers

Maybe the first question is to ask ourselves is why we need to learn jQuery Mobil? There are so many frameworks around that we, for sure, can learn and be proficient in just only a few of them. As the mobile environment came to stay at least for the rest of our professional life, we will need to be professionally productive on the one more popular, supported, flexible, powerful and complete. At this moment this means to use jQuery and jQuery Mobile.
To master a framework is hard work. To discover the tricks to get our goals in an easier way takes a long time. Our path began studying the jQuery Mobile site docs, excellent and huge. Then we went to our first book on the theme to read and mentally listen the mastermind behind it. As the subject is wide we will travel a long way on books to really be a jQuery Mobile Master. It is not a short way!

This book is packed with hardly won advices. The author guides us on setting up an environment and tools we need to just open a new file; XAAMP, jQuery, Aptana, CDNs. We continue with jQuery ThemeRoller and Screenfly.
You will remember your HTML5 Responsive Web Design, media queries, Modernizr, geolocation and web storage, WURFL and RESS; my God do I really need to learn all of them?
All of this was an intro, beginning on chapter four and an 80-page tour we start to use jQuery Mobile framework on a hands-on and carefully crafted Project, yes a project, not just short code examples. Reading is easy, typing and testing ad infinitum is what gives us power, happiness and glory.
The craft is carefully dosed going form opening a new page to geolocation and dealing with PHP and WebSQL. The author is very optimistic thinking that we apprentices after 8 chapters are ready to bite a hard ball and go straight on node.js
To master jQuery Mobile you really need more than this book and many more projects. But yes, this is a good book!

Errors in the text/code. For instance, in Chapter 2, under "Creating a Theme," the order of the required css files is reversed. The publisher does not list the book on its site so downloading/submitting errata is not possible. In addition, in some cases the tools employed in the book have evolved to newer versions, e.g., Modernizr, making it difficult to actually build the application.

There is also an excellent guide to creating web apps with Cordova

This book offers an advanced guide to developing with jQuery Mobile, using the latest versions of the jQuery Mobile and jQuery libraries. The book presents real world examples and assumes some knowledge of CSS3, HTML5 and Javascript (jQuery). Examples are given for both multi-page and single-page templates. There is also an excellent guide to creating web apps with Cordova, both for iOS and Android. It's a good source of reference for responsive layout design with JQM (works fine with desktops too). Also welcome is the coverage of HTML5 features using modernizr and Wurfl for device detection. The data examples are PHP-centric, but are clearly written and easy to understand. More advanced is the discussion of getting jQuery Mobile to play nicely with Node.js, Express and Jade templates. The book also offers a very useful discussion on 'best practice' in mobile design and delivery. The examples provided are managed using Aptana studio, but this isn't required and the complete source code is available for download anyway. All in all the book offers an extensive coverage of the practical possibilities of JQM and one I'd highly recommend.
