About the Author
Stanley G. Prussin received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1964. After doing postdoctoral research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1964 to 1966, he accepted a post at the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, where he still teaches in the position of a Professor of Graduate Studies. Professor Prussin is a member of the American Nuclear Society and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His areas of teaching expertise are low-energy nuclear physics, nuclear- and radiochemistry and applications, radiation protection and control, nuclear chemical engineering, and nuclear instrumentation.

missing the objective

I have many books on the subject and I was expecting a fresh view from the applications point of view, however the book is not really intended for applications, it is more devoted to give you some general aspects of theoretical nuclear physics, and eventually, within the problemas at the end of each chapter, you may have to enter into one application by yourself.
The author gives a reasonable theoretical analysis but not better than conventional books on the subject do. If you want to get the feeling of application you can go for Krane's book on Introductory Nuclear Physics, and if you realy want a fresh view of the subject, including modern applications, go for Fundamentals in Nuclear Physics by L.L. Basdevant et. al.
I wonder why the book was not called just "Model Approach to Nuclear Physics", not mentioning any intended applications since there are not many worked out examples on the text, I mean with experimental details like detectors, targetry, expected cross sections and counting rates, efficiencies and so on.
I emphasizes that my low score is not related with the theory which still, I believe is not better than many other conventional books, but on the misleading word Applications in the title relative to the real contents. So the small letters from the title "A Model Approach" should be big size and "Applications" in smaller size.

I did not use this book for a class, ...

I did not use this book for a class, but as one of several references while writing my doctoral dissertation. Several sections were more clearly written than other books. In particular, Dr. Prussin explains gamma-ray interactions very clearly and precisely, including for example why the cross section for photoelectric absorption scales so strongly with Z and, similarly, why the photoelectric interaction favors more tightly bound atomic electrons. I have not gone through the whole book but Dr. Prussin definitely knows what he's talking about.
