About the Author

Nick Haslam is Professor and Head of the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He received his PhD in clinical and social psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and taught at the New School for Social Research in New York City for several years before returning to Australia in 2002. Nick’s academic interests span personality, social and clinical psychology. His research has explored the classification of mental disorders, the basic forms of social relationships, stigma, and the nature of dehumanization and other forms of prejudice. He is also interested in the psychology of morality and in refugee mental health. Nick has published over 200 scholarly articles and book chapters, and he also writes regularly for a general audience in outlets including The Conversation, The Guardian and The Washington Post. In addition to this volume he has published several other books, including Introduction to the Taxometric Method, Values and Vulnerabilities: The Ethics of Research with Refugees and Asylum Seekers, and most recently Psychology in the Bathroom, an only partly tongue-in-cheek study of the psychology of excretion. Nick is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and is currently President of the Society of Australasian Social Psychologists.

About the Author
Hailing from the U.K., Peter Membrey has worked for Red Hat, holds a RHCE certification, and worked and taught at a number of educational institutions since the beginning of his career. He knows what Linux users like and need, and hopes that CentOS will get the kudos it deserves. He lives in Hong Kong and is teaching and consulting on all matters to do with Linux Enterprise networking, while studying for his master's degree.

Eelco Plugge was born in 1986 in the Netherlands and quickly developed an interest in computers and everything revolving around them. He enjoyed a study at the ICT Academy in Amersfoort, after which he eventually ended up as a data encryption specialist working at McAfee at the age of 21. He's a young BCS Professional member and shows a great interest in everything IT- and security-related, but also everything related to the Japanese language and culture. He is working upon expanding his field of expertise through studies and maintaining a young family while at it.

First steps into MongoDB

When I started reading this book, I was an experienced developer with no idea about why NoSQL was causing so much excitement. The idea of a database without keys and tables was completely foreign to me. Needless to say, I expected this book to praise all the benefits of the NoSQL movement and never even mention any short commings or drawbacks that it might have. To be told to leave behind my rdbms systems for good.

I was wrong...

While reading this book, the authors went to great links to express not only the benefits of a NoSQL database and the benefits that MongoDB has over its competitors, but also the draw backs to using this type of database. What a relief! A product that can stand on its own, with authors and developers who have a goal and are not trying to make a system that does everything and does it for you automatically (include cook dinner) is so rare in software these days.

This book is broken into 12 chapters, but in truth it is organized into three sections. Basics, Developing and Advanced. In the Basics section they cover the topics that are needed to bring you up to speed on MongoDB and NoSQL. If you only read one part of the book, I would recommend this section. It does such a good job of explaining things that you will no longer be the guy in the conversation looking lost and confused at the next conference. The developing section is great. It covers basic implementation into a PHP and Python project as well as helping you create a Blogging application. No "Hello World" for these guys. There are quite a few examples that allow you to actually understand, line by line, what is going on in the code. They have done such a good job explaining the examples that even if you do not know PHP or Python, you will be able to understand the code. The Advanced section starts hitting the high points of administration. I started getting a little lost here, but my background is heavily weighted towards development so that is not really suprising.

In my opinion this book is not for the beginning developer and it is not for the experienced MongoDB developer/admin, but it is great starting poitn for the seasoned developer/administrator who would like to actually understand the NoSQL movement and get a basic understanding of MongoDB. The book is very short (less than 300 pages, which is short for a technical book) and provides many examples to help ease the learning curve to a manageable level.

I would highly recommend this book to any developer who is either thinking about implementing a NoSQL solution, or is just tired of trying to figure out what everyone is talking about when they say NoSQL.

Good Intro for both DBA and Developer

I have to admit I learned quite a lot from this book. It is full of detail, plenty of examples, and even a sample application - building a blog publishing system with PHP & Mongodb.

What I liked:
The layout of the book is exactly how you'd want a technical book to be. The intro chapter answers some of your nagging questions such as How is data stored in a non-relational database? Why would you use a NoSQL database? What are it's use cases? From there the chapters take you by the hand, installing, querying, developing, and finally administering. So the book is easy to navigate.

As a DBA I wanted to know about replication, so I jumped right to chapter eleven. You learn about the oplog which is like the binlog in mysql, an ongoing log of changes to the database. The slaves then fetch and apply these changes themselves. Single master & single slave, single master & multiple slaves, multi master replication and cascading are all topologies that MongoDB supports.

There's of course also a whole chapter on general database administration of MongoDB, including full coverage of backups and so on. There's also a whole chapter on sharding, which is the process of scaling your database horizontally so you can handle more reads and writes.

What I didn't like:
The author seemed to make some sweeping statements that bothered me quite a bit. I won't go as far as to say there was a lack of relational database knowledge, but it was implied: "Improving performance with a relational database is usually straightforward: you buy a bigger, faster server." Well no actually, that's not really how you improve performance. As a long standing DBA with a decade and a half of experience I can tell you the best way to get orders of magnitude performance improvements is to look at how you are using resources, and use he more efficiently. In affect tuning developers code, and teaching them how to write optimal code, how to think about resources, and how to build test cases to benchmark.

Another one that was illustrative: "developers always have to work against the flow". Well I'm of two minds here. Yes they have to work against the flow, and constraints and structure is built into the database for a reason. So you have useful data at the end of the day, year, or decade of collecting it. On the other hand what I think they quote above is getting at is, the way data in an application is stored in memory, ie data structures, is very very different from how it is stored in databases. Do we have an alternative to this, and when and how might we use that?

I would have liked to see more comparisons, weighing the pros and cons of traditional rdbms's and then NoSQL solutions, and how they measure up. Since MongoDB is so new, inevitably folks considering the technology are somewhat versed already in relational databases, and are asking will MongoDB work. I would have also liked some business case studies, for instance a discussion of the recent FourSquare outage, what went wrong with MongoDB, and why.

On balance this is a really great book, well written, and easy to read. It will definitely address all of your beginning questions as both a DBA and a Developer, and send you off in the right direction to get started with MongoDB!

Very good book for developers and DBA

I have used MongoDB for about an year for research and development. Very impressed the way how MongoDB works. I had some questions which I was not able to find answers in mongodb.org or forums but after reading this book, I came to know some basic principles and they are applied in MongoDB. This book focus on developers who would like to get started on a NoSQL platform as well as for DBAs who know nothing about MongoDB. This book was written few months ago based on version 1.6 but we have new version 1.8 with some additional features. The topic says "Database for Cloud and Desktop Computing", there is no clear references to "what they actually mean to developers/DBA". The way topics are structured is very nice (basics to advanced) which motivated me to read the book in two days.

Positives
* Gave a clear motivation on why we need MongoDB which I think is a big plus
* Very detailed
* Most aspects of MongoDB is covered

Negatives
* Inconsistencies in the syntax for the examples given. Though all of them are valid, there is no clear explanation on why. That is, some keywords are in double quotes, some are in single and some did not have quotes at all. Eg., "$elemMatch", $or
* There are some references about mapReduce but there is no separate topic about that at all.

All in all, a must have book for starters.

Insight into the Enlightenment

"I conceive of two sorts of inequality in the human species: one, which I call natural or physical, because it is established by nature and consists in the difference of ages, health, bodily strengths, and qualities of mind or soul; the other which may be called moral or political inequality, because it depends upon a sort of convention and is established, or at least authorized, by consent of men. The latter consists in the different privileges that some men enjoy to the prejudice of others, such as to be richer, more honored, more powerful than they, or even to make themselves obeyed by them."
In 1750, the Academy of Dijon held an essay contest. The question, `Has the restoration of the sciences & arts tended to purify morals?' The First Discourse (Discourse on the Sciences and Arts) was the winning essay. Rousseau's powerful critique of the enlightenment in modern Europe spit in the faces of the very people that were judging his work. However, Rousseau's arguments and assessment of the enlightenment were so profound that even the elite scholars of the Academy could not deny Rousseau his just recognition for superior writing and understanding of the nature of the sciences and arts and their effects on modern life.
Rousseau's Second Discourse (Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequity) was a follow up to the first. In it, Rousseau delves deeper into the issue of human origins (i.e. the state of nature) and the cause and effects of human inequality.
No other philosopher has be praised and condemned, celebrated and written-off as much as Rousseau. His countless effects on modern life go relatively unknown. Anyone who has read Marx, must ask themselves, what history book was Marx reading. Upon reading Rousseau's Discourses, it become obvious, Marx read Rousseau. However, "Rousseau can still overpower where Marx falls flat." (Allan Bloom, `The Closing of The American Mind,' 217.)
Rousseau is a must read for anyone who is a student of, or interested in, philosophy, political philosophy, Marxism, or simply has a longing to return to the state of nature and thinks that life would be best if we would all just "go and work in our garden." (Voltaire, `Candide,' 144.)

Was one of the 6 required texts for my political science 200 class. I actually liked it more than some of the other books we had to read. Not too difficult to read and was exactly what was required for my class.

Price-gouging on 40-year-old translation

Good translation with good notes, but I no longer assign it for my classes. Instead I use the very adequate Donald Cress translation from Hackett, Rousseau: The Basic Political Writings. When the Masters was first published, it was in a small format and had a sewn binding. The current version is simply an unchanged photo-enlargement of the earlier one, now in a crappy perfect binding and at a price that has steadily increased toward absurdity—especially after 40 years of sales. This is gouging pure and simple, and I can't see why I should participate by requiring it of my students.

Still works after all these years

I had my colors analyzed at summer camp, way back in the 1980's, using this book. Almost twenty years later, I still have the color swatches, and still rely on them for choosing what shades to wear.

The book gives the information. Unfortunately, printing methods don't show the dramatic differences that holding the fabric sheets under a person's face does, as we did back in summer camp.

I've seen (and agree with) the complaints here from women of color that this book doesn't meet their needs. I'd suggest "Women of Color" by Darlene Mathis as an alternate resource. It applies the seasonal system with darker skinned women in mind. Carol Jackson, who wrote this book, wrote an introduction to "Women of Color," where she admitted the shortcomings in her book, and endorsed the new book as taking the next, needed step.

Refreshing, to see an author recognize and endorse another author's correction for their own book's shortcomings.

Pleasantly Surprised

I was quite skeptical that a book which has been in print so long would contain up-to-date information that I could use. Not only does it contain sensible advice on dressing and accessorizing, I learned that I've never worn the correct make-up colors. In a couple of days, with simple modifications in make-up and dressing, I feel I look much better. Not so simple was determining my correct "season". With just the book that is a bit tricky, but I can tell that I did get it right. A surprising little gem.

This is the second volume in Jessica Salmonson's fantasy series set around the life of Tomoe Gozen, a semi-legendary woman Samurai in 12th Century Japan. Gozen is believed to have become the wife of Minamoto no Yoshinaka who launched an unsuccessful struggle to gain lordship over Japan and the Minamoto clan that culminated in a massive battle near Kyoto in 1184.

This part of the story starts with Tomoe's refusal to accept a husband. In Feudal Japan a woman was permitted to be a samurai until she was married. At that time she must put aside her weapons and become an obedient homemaker - hardly the kind of role for which the young woman was suited. Instead she storms off and becomes enmeshed in fighting the efforts of one sword smith to destroy the life and works of Okio, the most brilliant sword smith of the age.

In a mid-book climax where Tomoe and her companions battle the 55 samurai who took the life of Okio she discovers the one of her new friends is actually Kiso Yoshinaka, to whom she was promised as bride, and who invites her to join him as a full equal instead of a subservient child bearer. Tomoe accepts, and joins in Lord Kiso's conquests as he gradually builds the strength he will need to challenge his cousin.

In the process of this struggle Tomoe is granted the use of the Golden Naginata, a weapon that will blind anyone who see is unless it has been coated with the blood of the magical kirin that is its guardian. While the weapon often grants victory it seems to collect a toll on its wielder, not in strength, but in anger and self-doubt. Thus this isn't just an adventure story but a tale of Tomoe's efforts to find herself in a culture that always seems to limit her choices.

Aside from an overly long battle scene that seems to be more concerned with its emulation of Japanese convention than stimulating interest, this is a better book than it's predecessor. It is more of a novel, and Tomoe Gozen reveals a great deal of character as she follows her own difficult path. She is atypical, even for a female samurai and never falls into the role of romantic heroine.

The Golden Naginata

This is a delightful and thoughtful story set in the mythic world of Naipon where the myths and dreams of the Japanese are real. The story is about the woman warrior Tomoe Gozen and how she came to wield the wonderful sword called the Golden Naginata. This book is the second in the series - a compelling story - I enjoyed being immersed in another time and another way of life.

A rare and beautiful adventure of a warrior in a world of Japanese goblins, samurai's and a truly glorious weapon that Jescia Salmonson has written in The Golden Naginata.
I treasure this Japanese fantasy, it's the most colourful fantasy adventure I've entered. It's one of those books that will remain on my shelf for years to come.
