This book has some interesting opinions on how the Native people of the Americas lived, the design of their dwellings and what their buildings inferred about how they interacted.There are many references to illustrations which are unfortunately not in the kindle version. It Often refers to their state of civilization as a stage of barbarism but statements like this one " The law of hospitality as administered by the American aborigines tended to the final equalization of subsistence. Hunger and destitution could not exist at one end of the indian village or in one section of an encampment while plenty prevailed else where in the same village or encampment" makes me wonder who the savages truly were or are. There are many observations like this one in the book and make it of interest to read IMO.

�Qu� historia fantastica!

Como indica su t�tulo es una novela que relata una historia de que alguien por algo misterioso consigui� ir del a�o 2007 al a�o 1808 pero all� estaba en la misma zona. No quiero arruinar el cuento por revelar detalles. S�lo te digo que lo disfrut� mucho.

La escritora debe tener una imaginaci�n vivida para construir una trama tan intricada. Tambi�n me gusta su estilo de escribir y que haya creado escenas muy conmovedoras.

Otro libro de ella que me encant� era La vida que no eleg�.

El peor libro que he le�do en a�os

Pens� que por haber ganado un concurso, este libro ser�a por lo menos interesante. Cu�nto me equivoqu�. El estilo de escritura es simple, como el de un libro para ni�os, los personajes son igualmente simples y poco desarrollados y la historia es bastante poco satisfactoria. Nunca se me quit� de la cabeza la idea de que el libro fue escrito por una adolescente de unos 14 a�os que solo sabe describir labios como "carnosos." Similarmente, todos los personajes descritos son como modelos perfectos, y las historias de amor son poco convincentes. Realmente, se lee como el diario de una adolescente. Los cap�tulos est�n separados en dos personages, pero ambos tienen un estilo casi id�ntico que va en contra de la premisa que son dos personas diferentes.

Tambi�n me molest�--a�n que no sea tan importante--el hecho que la autora no se dio el tiempo de averiguar bastantes detalles de la vida de sus personajes, como por ejemplo que en USA no se pasa de la escuela secundaria a la escuela de derecho (como milagrosamente lo hizo L�a!) o que un bufete de abogados no tiene ni "director" ni "propietaria." Hubo bastantes otras ocasiones cuando me di cuenta que la autora no tiene idea de los aspectos reales de la vida de sus personajes, y me qued� pregunt�ndome cu�l fue el prop�sito de que ellos fueran todos americanos si ella aparentemente no sab�a mucho sobre la vida en este pa�s (Will vive pobre en Brooklyn pero tiene un carro? Ja!). Lo termin� por qu� no me gusta malgastar el dinero, pero dada la opci�n, no lo hubiese le�do a�n que fuera gratis.

ML ("Meta Language") is a functional language that is a foundation (lamda-like proof discipline) for proof assistants like Coq and Isabelle, and this author's "hidden agenda" is writing proofs, which he (rightfully) sees at the foundation for discrete math, and how it unifies math and programming proofs. I've used ML, and in some ways it is closer to Python than Lisp!

It doesn't have the memory sparing features of Haskell like lazy evaluation, but you can fake it with closures. You'll probably never use ML again unless you get into Coq and language or compiler development, but the material in this book is an easy jump to F# if you're going .net, or Haskell if you're going more mainstream in functional, CAS, math, etc. Coq itself is OCaml (which I personally love), and ML isn't too far from that, either. I've seen four line Haskell algorithms that can solve the hardest Sudoku puzzles in a fifth of a second, so functional is not dead by any means, even though Lisp goes back to the Fortran days.

What's odd about this text, is that it covers VERY advanced topics at an undergrad sophmore level. It's targeted to math majors who "must" have a comp sci course or comp sci's who MUST have a discrete math course. You DO learn both a very cool functional language and there are a LOT of discrete math examples, but you're learning at a really high level-- frankly more about writing your own language or compiler than writing IN a language. As an engineer and roboticist I loved the digital circuit examples, worth the price of the book for me as a self study engineer and online discrete math tutor.

Because the author's book website at Wheaton has all the contents, lots of links, many sample pages, etc. (just google or bing the title of this book, then go to the publisher site, then use the top link for the book's site at Wheaton), go there and check it all out before investing in using this for a class you teach. My one caution to the author: your website is a little timid on giving answers due to not wanting to burden teachers with a place students can cheat. Many of us are now self study types, and this book (in my opinion) is just as good for solo acts, and in fact one of the few out there with a LOT of pedagogy built in for us autodidacts. Keep posting those self study solutions, please??!!

On the other hand, if you're an autodidact, engineer, self taught programmer, etc. like me, you will LOVE this book as it stands. I'm a roboticist who engineers and writes embedded domain specific languages, and this is outstanding for brushing up on discrete math, while reviewing functional programming at the same time. The practical tips and answered exercises and website code downloads make real world use immediate.

Now for some frank and painful honest issues for students. If you go on in math or engineering or programming, you're likely going to have to get into Java, C#, Matlab, etc. more than functional. Functional purists look down on Java via Lisp or Haskell just like even deeper geniuses look down on functional via Prolog. What about the real world? The real world is that Scala is probably going to replace Java in your lifetime if you are under 50! If you are over like me, it still is the heart of Netflix, LinkedIn, and even a lot of new features on that little known "Amazon" site. Scala is a combination of functional and imperative and runs on the JVM! So, I'm fully supportive of this author that you can't go wrong with a semester of functional, and since this brushes up your discrete math to boot, it's a double win!

I teach free online discrete math tutorials, from an embedded circuit - robotics point of view, and have eagerly adoped this text exclusively, and my students LOVE it. Once you use it, you will never want to go back to either an intro functional or an intro discrete text again, because the purpose of both is to integrate with each other, and this is the ONLY text that does that, with nearly 700 pages of dynamite examples that run the first time you try them. Because of the self study twist, I'd unhesitatingly use it for online classes, at community colleges, and even for AP High School classes for your brightest pre-undergrad achievers. Heck, they ARE teaching this to juniors in High School-- in China. Highly Recommended.

Jeff Thill's first literary effort is a more than creditable ...

Jeff Thill's first literary effort is a more than creditable attempt - the story is fascinating, gripping even, the suspense builds up gradually over the chapters and you are really immersed in the story. The battle descriptions are extremely powerful and the writer manages to present a vivid account of 17th century Europe. For a woman reader, however, I felt there was something missing - I expected some in-depth psychology, a deeper scrutiny of Beck and his life. However, maybe this is unfair, it is above all an 'action' book, the kind of reading male readers prefer but that doesn't mean it isn't a book suitable for both sexes. All in all, an interesting read and a valuable addition to the literary genre of historical fiction.

An excellent historical novel

A fascinating insight into a turbulent period of European history, namely the Thirty Years War. This well-written novel puts you right into the smells, tastes and sights of seventeenth century Luxembourg and its environs. Jean de Beck is an interesting character, but what really emerges is the senselessness of dynastic warfare and great power politics as it devastates the lives of those caught up in them. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good historical fiction, particularly those with an interest in Luxembourg, which is brilliantly evoked.

My husband and I purchased this book after watching Janine on Shark Tank. Also because I had worked at Boost in the past and thought it would be an interesting read. Unfortunately, I did not find this book a good read. This is simply because so much of what was said in there about how employees are treated was never ever seen when I worked for Boost. The book states so many times that employees are valuable and are assets and are treated with respect and love their jobs at Boost. I find this to be completely untrue. When I worked there I was treated like absolute crap. For example, I had surgery and then was told if I didn't come into work the next day I would lose my job because I was a casual and they could fire me "whenever they wanted." I of course went into work, not wanting to lose my job and asked if I could please just serve the customers on the counter instead of any physical work for the day. I was told no and was then made to empty a freezer and then proceed to clean it with a small spatula to scrap the ice out of it. Not only was I freezing because I was already unwell and being put into that scenario was a bad idea, but, this caused me to hurt my stomach where I had just had surgery and did anyone care? Of course not, because they never did at Boost. What they cared about was $$$ and how many they could make each day. Not about the well-being of an employee who just had surgery!
I of course learnt quickly what Boost was all about and quit. I would never work for them again and so many girls I know agree that it is one of the worst places they have worked at. I had a Boost yesterday and couldn't help but ask the girl behind the counter if she enjoyed working at Boost. Her response - "I hate it, I am treated like crap and not paid enough to put up with it, but unfortunately I have uni bills that means I have to deal with this until I can find something new."
Moral of the story: Don't believe everything you read in this book.

Beautiful and Inspiring

One of the best bios I've read. As an avid Boost juice customer I was super curious how this woman got started. I love the story behind the companies I love. Amazingly her story resonated with me being that she got started much later in life after a journey of love and loss. I'm excited that she was open with her story, the good and the bad and has gained amazing new respect from me.

Great Aussie success story.

A interesting read on the success of Boost, would have liked a bit more on the set up and Adelaide and the effect the radio publicity had on making their store stand out from the crowd, that seemed to be a little glossed over, whilst good product is important, bringing it the publics attention is also vital. Otherwise an interesting read, well done to Janine and the Allis's.
