Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, by Daniel H. Pink

The New York Times bestseller that gives readers a paradigm—shattering new way to think about motivation.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

INTRODUCTION
The Puzzling Puzzles ofHarry Harlow and Edward Deci

In the middle of the last century, two young scientists conductedexperiments that should have changed the world— but did not.Harry F. Harlow was a professor of psychology at the Universityof Wisconsin who, in the 1940s, established one of the world’s firstlaboratories for studying primate behavior. One day in 1949, Harlowand two colleagues gathered eight rhesus monkeys for a two- weekexperiment on learning. The researchers devised a simple mechanicalpuzzle like the one pictured on the next page. Solving it requiredthree steps: pull out the vertical pin, undo the hook, and lift thehinged cover. Pretty easy for you and me, far more challenging for athirteen- pound lab monkey.

Harlow’s puzzle in the starting (left) and solved (right) positions.

The experimenters placed the puzzles in the monkeys’ cages toobserve how they reacted— and to prepare them for tests of theirproblem- solving prowess at the end of the two weeks. But almostimmediately, something strange happened. Unbidden by any outsideurging and unprompted by the experimenters, the monkeys beganplaying with the puzzles with focus, determination, and what lookedlike enjoyment. And in short order, they began figuring out how thecontraptions worked. By the time Harlow tested the monkeys ondays 13 and 14 of the experiment, the primates had become quiteadept. They solved the puzzles frequently and quickly; two- thirds ofthe time they cracked the code in less than sixty seconds.

Now, this was a bit odd. Nobody had taught the monkeys howto remove the pin, slide the hook, and open the cover. Nobody hadrewarded them with food, affection, or even quiet applause whenthey succeeded. And that ran counter to the accepted notions of howprimates— including the bigger- brained, less hairy primates knownas human beings— behaved.

Scientists then knew that two main drives powered behavior. Thefirst was the biological drive. Humans and other animals ate to satetheir hunger, drank to quench their thirst, and copulated to satisfytheir carnal urges. But that wasn’t happening here. “Solution did notlead to food, water, or sex gratification,” Harlow reported.1But the only other known drive also failed to explain the monkeys’peculiar behavior. If biological motivations came from within, this second drive came from without— the rewards and punishmentsthe environment delivered for behaving in certain ways. This wascertainly true for humans, who responded exquisitely to such externalforces. If you promised to raise our pay, we’d work harder. If youheld out the prospect of getting an A on the test, we’d study longer. If you threatened to dock us for showing up late or for incorrectlycompleting a form, we’d arrive on time and tick every box. But thatdidn’t account for the monkeys’ actions either. As Harlow wrote, andyou can almost hear him scratching his head, “The behavior obtainedin this investigation poses some interesting questions for motivationtheory, since significant learning was attained and efficient performancemaintained without resort to special or extrinsic incentives.”What else could it be?

To answer the question, Harlow offered a novel theory— whatamounted to a third drive: “The performance of the task,” he said,“provided intrinsic reward.” The monkeys solved the puzzles simplybecause they found it gratifying to solve puzzles. They enjoyed it.The joy of the task was its own reward.

If this notion was radical, what happened next only deepened theconfusion and controversy. Perhaps this newly discovered drive—Harlow eventually called it “intrinsic motivation”— was real. Butsurely it was subordinate to the other two drives. If the monkeyswere rewarded— with raisins!— for solving the puzzles, they’d nodoubt perform even better. Yet when Harlow tested that approach, the monkeys actually made more errors and solved the puzzles lessfrequently. “Introduction of food in the present experiment,” Harlowwrote, “served to disrupt performance, a phenomenon not reportedin the literature.”

Now, this was really odd. In scientific terms, it was akin to rollinga steel ball down an inclined plane to measure its velocity—only to watch the ball fl oat into the air instead. It suggested thatour understanding of the gravitational pulls on our behavior wasinadequate— that what we thought were fixed laws had plenty ofloopholes. Harlow emphasized the “strength and persistence” of themonkeys’ drive to complete the puzzles. Then he noted:It would appear that this drive . . . may be as basic and strongas the [other] drives. Furthermore, there is some reason tobelieve that [it] can be as efficient in facilitating learning.2

At the time, however, the prevailing two drives held a tight grip onscientific thinking. So Harlow sounded the alarm. He urged scientiststo “close down large sections of our theoretical junkyard” andoffer fresher, more accurate accounts of human behavior.3 He warnedthat our explanation of why we did what we did was incomplete. Hesaid that to truly understand the human condition, we had to takeaccount of this third drive.

Then he pretty much dropped the whole idea.Rather than battle the establishment and begin offering a morecomplete view of motivation, Harlow abandoned this contentiousline of research and later became famous for studies on the scienceof affection.4 His notion of this third drive bounced around the psychologicalliterature, but it remained on the periphery— of behavioralscience and of our understanding of ourselves. It would be twodecades before another scientist picked up the thread that Harlowhad so provocatively left on that Wisconsin laboratory table. In the summer of 1969, Edward Deci was a Carnegie Mellon Universitypsychology graduate student in search of a dissertation topic.Deci, who had already earned an MBA from Wharton, was intriguedby motivation but suspected that scholars and businesspeople hadmisunderstood it. So, tearing a page from the Harlow playbook, heset out to study the topic with the help of a puzzle.

Deci chose the Soma puzzle cube, a then popular Parker Brothersoffering that, thanks to YouTube, retains something of a cultfollowing today. The puzzle, shown below, consists of seven plasticpieces— six comprising four one- inch cubes, one comprising threeone- inch cubes. Players can assemble the seven pieces into a few millionpossible combinations— from abstract shapes to recognizableobjects.

The seven pieces of the Soma puzzle unassembled (left) and then fashioned into one ofseveral million possible configurations

For the study, Deci divided participants, male and female universitystudents, into an experimental group (what I’ll call GroupA) and a control group (what I’ll call Group B). Each participated inthree one- hour sessions held on consecutive days.

Here’s how the sessions worked: Each participant entered a roomand sat at a table on top of which were the seven Soma puzzle pieces, drawings of three puzzle configurations, and copies of Time, The NewYorker, and Playboy. (Hey, it was 1969.) Deci sat on the opposite endof the table to explain the instructions and to time performance witha stopwatch.

In the first session, members of both groups had to assemble theSoma pieces to replicate the configurations before them. In the secondsession, they did the same thing with different drawings— onlythis time Deci told Group A that they’d be paid $1 (the equivalentof nearly $6 today) for every configuration they successfully reproduced.Group B, meanwhile, got new drawings but no pay. Finally,in the third session, both groups received new drawings and had toreproduce them for no compensation, just as in session one. (See thetable below.)

The twist came midway through each session. After a participanthad assembled the Soma puzzle pieces to match two of the threedrawings, Deci halted the proceedings. He said that he was going togive them a fourth drawing—but to choose the right one, he neededto feed their completion times into a computer. And— this being thelate 1960s, when room- straddling mainframes were the norm anddesktop PCs were still a decade away— that meant he had to leavefor a little while.

On the way out, he said, “I shall be gone only a few minutes, youmay do whatever you like while I’m gone.” But Deci wasn’t reallyplugging numbers into an ancient teletype. Instead, he walked toan adjoining room connected to the experiment room by a one- waywindow. Then, for exactly eight minutes, he watched what peopledid when left alone. Did they continue fiddling with the puzzle, perhaps attempting to reproduce the third drawing? Or did they dosomething else— page through the magazines, check out the centerfold, stare into space, catch a quick nap?

In the first session, not surprisingly, there wasn’t much differencebetween what the Group A and Group B participants did duringthat secretly watched eight- minute free- choice period. Both continuedplaying with the puzzle, on average, for between three and ahalf and four minutes, suggesting they found it at least somewhatinteresting.

On the second day, during which Group A participants were paidfor each successful configuration and Group B participants were not, theunpaid group behaved mostly as they had during the first free- choiceperiod. But the paid group suddenly got really interested in Soma puzzles. On average, the people in Group A spent more than five minutesmessing with the puzzle, perhaps getting a head start on that thirdchallenge or gearing up for the chance to earn some beer money whenDeci returned. This makes intuitive sense, right? It’s consistent withwhat we believe about motivation: Reward me and I’ll work harder.Yet what happened on the third day confirmed Deci’s own suspicionsabout the peculiar workings of motivation— and gently calledinto question a guiding premise of modern life. This time, Deci toldthe participants in Group A that there was only enough money topay them for one day and that this third session would therefore beunpaid. Then things unfolded just as before— two puzzles, followedby Deci’s interruption.

During the ensuing eight- minute free- choice period, the subjectsin the never- been- paid Group B actually played with the puzzlefor a little longer than they had in previous sessions. Maybe theywere becoming ever more engaged; maybe it was just a statisticalquirk. But the subjects in Group A, who previously had been paid, responded differently. They now spent significantly less time playingwith the puzzle— not only about two minutes less than duringtheir paid session, but about a full minute less than in the firstsession when they initially encountered, and obviously enjoyed, thepuzzles.

In an echo of what Harlow discovered two decades earlier, Decirevealed that human motivation seemed to operate by laws that rancounter to what most scientists and citizens believed. From the officeto the playing field, we knew what got people going. Rewards—especially cold, hard cash— intensified interest and enhanced performance. What Deci found, and then confirmed in two additionalstudies he conducted shortly thereafter, was almost the opposite.“When money is used as an external reward for some activity, thesubjects lose intrinsic interest for the activity,” he wrote.5 Rewardscan deliver a short- term boost— just as a jolt of caffeine can keepyou cranking for a few more hours. But the effect wears off— and, worse, can reduce a person’s longer- term motivation to continue theproject.

Human beings, Deci said, have an “inherent tendency to seekout novelty and challenges, to extend and exercise their capacities,to explore, and to learn.” But this third drive was more fragile thanthe other two; it needed the right environment to survive. “Onewho is interested in developing and enhancing intrinsic motivationin children, employees, students, etc., should not concentrate onexternal- control systems such as monetary rewards,” he wrote in afollow- up paper.6 Thus began what for Deci became a lifelong questto rethink why we do what we do— a pursuit that sometimes puthim at odds with fellow psychologists, got him fired from a businessschool, and challenged the operating assumptions of organizationseverywhere.

“It was controversial,” Deci told me one spring morning fortyyears after the Soma experiments. “Nobody was expecting rewardswould have a negative effect.”

This is a book about motivation. I will show that much of whatwe believe about the subject just isn’t so— and that the insights thatHarlow and Deci began uncovering a few decades ago come muchcloser to the truth. The problem is that most businesses haven’tcaught up to this new understanding of what motivates us. Too manyorganizations— not just companies, but governments and nonprofitsas well— still operate from assumptions about human potential andindividual performance that are outdated, unexamined, and rootedmore in folklore than in science. They continue to pursue practicessuch as short- term incentive plans and pay- for- performance schemesin the face of mounting evidence that such measures usually don’twork and often do harm. Worse, these practices have infiltrated ourschools, where we ply our future workforce with iPods, cash, andpizza coupons to “incentivize” them to learn. Something has gonewrong.

The good news is that the solution stands before us— in thework of a band of behavioral scientists who have carried on the pioneeringefforts of Harlow and Deci and whose quiet work over thelast half- century offers us a more dynamic view of human motivation. For too long, there’s been a mismatch between what scienceknows and what business does. The goal of this book is to repair thatbreach.

Drive has three parts. Part One will look at the fl aws in ourreward- and- punishment system and propose a new way to thinkabout motivation. Chapter 1 will examine how the prevailing viewof motivation is becoming incompatible with many aspects of contemporarybusiness and life. Chapter 2 will reveal the seven reasonswhy carrot- and- stick extrinsic motivators often produce theopposite of what they set out to achieve. (Following that is a shortaddendum, Chapter 2a, that shows the special circumstances whencarrots and sticks actually can be effective.) Chapter 3 will introducewhat I call “Type I” behavior, a way of thinking and an approach tobusiness grounded in the real science of human motivation and poweredby our third drive— our innate need to direct our own lives, tolearn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and ourworld.

Part Two will examine the three elements of Type I behavior andshow how individuals and organizations are using them to improveperformance and deepen satisfaction. Chapter 4 will explore autonomy, our desire to be self- directed. Chapter 5 will look at mastery, our urge to get better and better at what we do. Chapter 6 willexplore purpose, our yearning to be part of something larger thanourselves.

Part Three, the Type I Toolkit, is a comprehensive set of resourcesto help you create settings in which Type I behavior can fl ourish. Here you’ll find everything from dozens of exercises to awakenmotivation in yourself and others, to discussion questions for yourbook club, to a supershort summary of Drive that will help youfake your way through a cocktail party. And while this book ismostly about business, in this section I’ll offer some thoughts abouthow to apply these concepts to education and to our lives outside ofwork.

But before we get down to all that, let’s begin with a thoughtexperiment, one that requires going back in time— to the days whenJohn Major was Britain’s prime minister, Barack Obama was a skinnyyoung law professor, Internet connections were dial- up, and a blackberrywas still just a fruit.

Reasonable, but not very deep.
By Vladimir Prus
The primary premise of the book is that carrots-and-sticks approach to motivation is no longer good for many modern jobs, and a better approach is needed, based on intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is then described as having three components - autonomy, mastery and purpose. Based on that, the last chapter gives practical recommendation for work, family and school setting. The book is brief, easy to read, and might be rather helpful if you are new to the concepts.

On the downside, there is not much of scientific background. While books that synthesize existing research can be really good, this one is based on works of Deci and Csikszentmihalyi, both fairly old, and some anecdotal evidence, like 20%-rule at Google (reportedly discontinued as of 2014). There is a list of more recommended books at the end, but it mostly consists of popular titles, not original research. I expected more sources, and more recent ones.

Fair amount of content, such as splitting of intrinsic motivation into autonomy, mastery and purpose, as well as many recommendations, appear to be author's imagination, not necessary validated. It also takes stance similar to "Flow", presenting intrinsic motivation as something entirely separate, with no relation to delayed extrinsic motivation, and often sounding like it's a good thing.

For that reason, I would suggest that watching TED talk by the book author might be enough, followed by more in-depth books.

Understanding motivation is a key to a happy and productive life
By Michael G Kurilla
Daniel H Pink's Drive is an in depth study of motivation and the need to move to a broader appreciation of the drivers for motivating people as society continues to transform itself beyond the traditional and classical industrial, assembly line mentality. Specifically, Pink focuses on concepts of autonomy, mastery, and purpose to reveal insights underlying personal and corporate motivation when non-routine tasks are the main purview of workers and corporations. The writing is clear and concise with pertinent academic studies highlighted to introduce ideas which are followed up with multiple real world situations and examples. Presented with an approachable delivery, Pink provides realistic advice for both side of potential transactions, both the initiator and receiver of the motivation.

While some of what Pink discusses may appear obvious and almost unnecessary to say, it is more a testament to his convincing message and the gradual adoption by so many such that the concepts are considered today's common sense.

good subject but too repetitive
By Twilky
the book had a good point i will admit that but the fact of the matter is that is was dragged on and over explained when the subject could have been fully understanded in a shorter more compact portion of the book. pretty much half of the book was about one subject and the other half was about another. the intrinsic verse extrinsic motivation could have been explained within the first 40 to 50 pages of the book but the author dragged it on. he kept on bringing the reader back to experiments that prove how someone has to be interested in what they do and not just offered a reward to increase productivity. i for one was able to grasp this concept with ease but as i read one it kept coming back to the same conclusion of how people have to be interested to be productive. even though new studies were introduced they all had the same outcome of people having to be interested in what the're doing. so at about the halfway point it did finally change the subject to really the same thing just reworded and the cycle restarts completely. so my final conclusion is that the book would have been more interesting to the reader if the author had found some other types of reasons and experiments instead of spreading a pamphlet of information across an entire book. now onto the topic. the topic of the book was very good but like i said before it was badly represented. the topic is covering why people hate work or how people love to do volunteer work. its all about the reason why they do the work. people will find volunteer work fun or worth doing because it was there idea to do it and they wanted to do it. if someone is simply doing work to get paid they will find it boring and not worth it because it sets up a routine. people like work because it intrests them they dont like it if its a routine task.

A thorough overview of the shoe making process but not a how to book
By nativewater
This book is a very thorough overview of how men's leather shoes were made in the days before factory automation. It is not, however, a how to book. After all, to build a decent pair of shoes, one would have to undergo a multi-year apprenticeship. It isn't something that one would learn from a book.
Shoes are built on a last, a wooden form that is a replica of the customer's foot. The carving of the last is itself a complicated endeavor involving the cutting and drying of blocks of the right kind of wood, a kind of beech and then shaping them to match the customer's foot. And on it goes to the selecting and cutting of the leather. Again, learning which kind of leather goes on what part of the shoe is a craft all in itself. As the pictures and text shows, a working shoe maker business would involve a number of people, each an expert in a particular part of the shoe making operation. So yes, buy the book, but don't expect this to be a how-to manual that will have you making shoes.

Great history of shoemaking and very clear steps in the creation of bespoke shoes
By J. Robbins
Wow! I loved this book!
I've wanted to learn how to hand-make shoes and this book is such a thorough step-by-step explanation for their creation. It also includes the history of shoes and shoemaking, last creation (a "last" is the shoe equivalent of a dressform), foot anatomy, leather and tanning techniques, and great detail about the most popular styles of men's shoes (and definitions for all the shoe terms).

I've watched many hours of (free) videos of shoes being made by hand (from the same site where everyone goes for cute kitty videos!) so this was a great complement to those videos and explained some of the steps that I didn't see in the videos or just needed to see with different explanations.

Since I have a background in patternmaking, fitting and sewing of garments, it wasn't that difficult a leap to see how to apply those same skills to making shoes. (If you don't have any background in sewing or patternmaking, you would probably need more than this book to get started in shoemaking, but it would still provide you with a wonderful exposure to the craft.)

I found the photos to be of a very high quality and the step-by-step explanations to be very clear. I really felt like I could jump right into making a pair of shoes if I bought some of the basic shoemaking tools. Now that I've finished reading the entire book I'm signing up for a class to learn how to make beautiful shoes by hand so I can learn how to properly use these specific tools from someone skilled in the craft.

The only thing this book was missing was more information about the pattern drafting/transfer process. The single-page on this topic was cursory and, even with my extensive draping and patternmaking experience, wasn't very helpful. (Even with this deficiency, it wasn't significant enough for me to remove an entire star for it. . . so I'm sticking with the 5-star rating since there isn't a 4 1/2-star option.)

If you have any interest in shoes or learning how to make them, this is a GREAT book for you.

The book on how to make real shoes.
By Albatross Necklace
Now I know how to make shoes! I haven't made a pair as the tools (like the proper industrial sewing machine) will take time to gather; it is still awesome to find a book on how to do something that almost no one knows how to do.
The book actually teaches you how to make real shoes, not how to "up-cycle" 2 liter bottles into shoes using duct tape and rat skins or how to make a sad pair of moccasins with your cub scout troop, like the other shoe making books I have seen.

This book is very in depth and holds your hand through all of it. It is rather daunting to see all that goes into making a real pair of shoes not to mention the time required. If you have the time and drive, and willingness to put up with some failures, this book can teach you a nearly lost art. If you want to follow through on what the book teaches, you will also be on a long quest to find all the proper tools or to fabricate make shift versions of the ones you cannot find.

Now to find a book on how to make real hats.

Gearing me up for the Spooky Season!
By Mommaof5
This was a great read! I like the paranormal/sci fi genre to a point. Scary stories or spooky stories, I tend to stay clear of. But this one? Was awesome!! And if this is what others in this genre are like, I have been missing out. I love when I think I have figured everything out in a story and then a surprise happens. And it is usually something that I slap my forehead and think "Why didn't I realize that?" A definite story I was unable to put down.
(I received a copy of this story in exchange for a fair and honest review)

perfect for halloween!
By Claire
A collection of short stories that are sure to send shivers to the spine. Darkness Echoes features a group of talented authors like LA Starkey, CK Dawn, Chess Desalls, Kelly Hall, DEL Connor and DB Nielsen. I loved these brilliant writers, I've read most of their books and I'm proud to say that they're a bunch of really amazing storytellers.

One of my favorites in this anthology is LA Starkey's Till Death Do Us Part. Jennifer had been friends with Zach forever, and she was devastated when Zach had gone away. When he came back, she struggled between staying with her boyfriend or falling in love with her best friend. When she finally convinced him to go to the haunted Vandercamp Mansion, she was in for a big spooky surprise. Jennifer realized time is of the essence, and she needed to defy time to resolve her issues and feelings for Zach. Until she discovered the truth about him.

The twist in the end was really something to look forward to. I loved the element of surprise and the wonderful story behind Till Death. LA Starkey sure rocked my world again!

Whether there'd be ghosts, shapeshifters, knights, spirits or anything supernatural, these authors brought their A-Game in their stories, thus making this anthology a must read and swoon-worthy. The mysteries, suspense, paranormal stuffs are all here, all pretty good and scary. Perfect read for Halloween!

Worth The Read
By Pikachu †FearStreetZombie†
Because it had so many stories in one, I'll be writing this review a little different, 6 reviews for each story then one final one.

Till Dead Do Us Part by L.A. Starkey:
This was honestly my most favorite story out of this whole book. I thought it was wonderfully written and everything just went together smoothly. I loved the whole story line though the ending did kinda throw my off, it took a while of thinking before I realized what was going on. Lol But I liked it anyway.

Witch Moth by Kelly Hall:
Oh come on! Really! You already know this story alone would get 5 stars. Mrs. Hall is beat when it comes to writing. All her books I've read so far, I've loved, so of course I would love this one as well. I liked it. It was different from her Light Keeper series, so of course I was eager to see how she wrote this story... it was awesome (of course!) I loved all the characters... Except Kitty's "best friends" ugh they were just down right horrible. Talk about heartbreaking! And of course Dominic (hubba-hubba! Haha) he gets 5 sexy stars alone. Hahah That ending bout ripped my heart out though *insert crying photo here*

The Coming of the Skin Walker by D.E.L. Conner:
I enjoyed this story so much. There was just something about it that reminded me of my best friend who I lost a few years ago. The story line was different, I admit, I haven't read anything like this before and it has defiantly peaked my curiosity.

Lantern by Chess Desalls:
For a short story, I found it adorable. But there were just to many things about this story that left me with questions and no answers. Like why is it the grandmother was not surprised when she started talking about what was in the Lantern? Why was Jared sent there and why did THAT help? I don't know.. I'm just kinda lost about a few things. The story was interesting though, just to many questions

Cloak of Echoes by CK Dawn:
I really can't say much about this one other than, I would have preferred to read this in a whole series. Lol. I really think it would make a awesome book all by itself because again, there were questions that needed answers that didn't get answering and it really had that "book" vibe and not a "short story" vibe to me.

Hallowed Eve by DB Nielsen:
I love pretty much all things having to do with the Headless horseman. So of course, I like this book. I want to love it, but I can't. I'm just not big into witchcraft stuff so closer to the end, I was having to skip a good bit to get past the coven and witchcraft things. If it weren't for that I would really label it as perfect. That's just my thoughts though.

All in all-
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and had very interesting stories in it. These six authors have mega talent and put a really great book together.

Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, by Marshall McLuhan, Lewis H. Lapham

This reissue of Understanding Media marks the thirtieth anniversary (1964-1994) of Marshall McLuhan's classic expose on the state of the then emerging phenomenon of mass media. Terms and phrases such as "the global village" and "the medium is the message" are now part of the lexicon, and McLuhan's theories continue to challenge our sensibilities and our assumptions about how and what we communicate.

There has been a notable resurgence of interest in McLuhan's work in the last few years, fueled by the recent and continuing conjunctions between the cable companies and the regional phone companies, the appearance of magazines such as WiRed, and the development of new media models and information ecologies, many of which were spawned from MIT's Media Lab. In effect, media now begs to be redefined. In a new introduction to this edition of Understanding Media, Harper's editor Lewis Lapham reevaluates McLuhan's work in the light of the technological as well as the political and social changes that have occurred in the last part of this century.

Review

...the most brilliant marketing mind of all belonged to Marshall McLuhan. Understanding Media is a timeless analysis of how language, speech and technology shape human behavior in the era of mass communication. The book is a cautionary tale for marketers today who hear the Web's siren call and ignore the power of the spoken word.

Understanding the World …
By Mike McClory
If you haven't read Understanding Media, don't be surprised if you find what's going on in the world confusing. McLuhan explained it all — or most of it — back in the 1950s. The best way to approach Understanding Media is to start with The Mechanical Bride, and then move on to The Gutenberg Galaxy before diving into Understanding Media. Otherwise, you may find much of what McLuhan has to offer baffling — kind of like walking into a play in the middle of the third act.

This is the Famous Book Everyone Quotes but Few Have Read!
By GaryinBoston
This is the famous book so often referred to by a multitude of intellectuals who have never, well, actually read it! While I found the precursor to this book, "The Gutenberg Galaxy" to be more fascinating (and scholarly), Understanding Media is a must read for those seeking insight into the evolution of human concsiousness and perception. Communications majors need not apply, since the book has little to do with "media" as it is defined today.

Marx thought that how production was organized (and changed over time) drove a society's social and political structures (and ultimately its citizens' psyches); McCluhan argues (in excruciating and exacting detail) that the FORM of the "extensions of man", AKA the man made world-- the wheel, clothes, the phonetic alphabet and linear printing, radio, TV, etc, AKA technology, have had profound psycho-social impacts throughout human history, driven by invention and innovation. E.g., no Gutenberg, no Renaissance and European nationalism.

Just a taste, much much more is in the book!

Cool book (in the McLuhanian sense)
By Robert Dubose
This is a beautiful edition. And the critical commentary by Terrence Gordon provides a helpful structure for getting your mind around McLuhan's ideas.

Although this may be McLuhan's great work, it is not best place to start. It is long and often incoherent. On page 39, McLuhan introduces a notoriously difficult metaphor that he uses through the book. It concerns hot and cool media. "Hot media are ... low in participation, and cool media are high in participation or completion by the audience." So, he explains, hieroglyphics and photographs are hot, but the phonetic alphabet and cartoons are cool. Radio and movies are hot, but the TV and the telephone are cool.

Does that make any sense? If not, the better place to start is his earlier work, The Gutenberg Galaxy. It is shorter, and the logic is much easier to follow. It lays out the basis of McLuhan's thinking about how changes in media reshape culture. If you are a systematic thinker like me, it is a far better book to get the basics of McLuhan's analytical method and ideas.

Even if you have the basics, UM is a dense, inspiring, and unsettling work. In each of the 33 chapters, McLuhan makes connections that change the way I think about culture. But just as often, he makes some nonsensical analogy or leap of logic and then fails to explain it.

In the end, it helps to stop trying to understand UM and let it inspire you to think.

In other words, it is very cool.

The Primal Blueprint laws are validated by two million years of human evolution as well as an ever-expanding body of contemporary scientific research. Sisson’s philosophy was originally met with skepticism as he aggressively challenged numerous mainstream health tenets. Eight years later, mainstream medical and health science are validating the Primal Blueprint tenets assertions that a high-carb, grain-based diet will make you fat, tired, and sick; that a consistent routine of medium-to-difficult cardiovascular workouts can actually compromise your health and longevity and increase risk of heart disease; and that consuming (whole food sources of) fat and cholesterol does not lead to heart disease as we have been led to believe, but rather offers many health benefits.

The New Primal Blueprintcomes alive with a vibrant full-color presentation packed with photos, graphics, and cartoons to make for a fun, easy, and memorable read. Join hundreds of thousands of primal enthusiasts and embrace a new way of life where you take responsibility for your health, fitness, and happiness. Reject once and for all the flawed conventional wisdom that has left modern citizens struggling with fatigue, excess body fat, and elevated disease risk factors as a consequence of grain-based eating habits, exhausting exercise routines, sedentary lifestyle patterns, and high-stress existences that misdirect our genes and promote illness instead of wellness and longevity.

Here is a quick overview of the ten Primal Blueprint laws that will help you quickly and effortlessly reprogram your genes in the direction of health, happiness, and longevity:

Law #1 - Eat Plants and Animals:Enjoy the nutritious, satisfying foods that fueled two million years of human evolution.

Law #2 - Avoid Poisonous Things:Avoid toxic modern foods (primarily refined vegetable oils, sugars, and grains) that make us fat, sick, and malnourished.

Law #3 - Move Frequently:Enhance fat metabolism, improve cognitive function, and avoid the stress of chronic cardio by keeping active with aerobic workouts at a comfortable heart rate, increased everyday movement, and complementary flexibility/mobility activities throughout your day.

Law #4 - Lift Heavy Things:Brief, intense sessions of functional, full-body resistance exercises supports muscle development, increases bone density, and prevents injury.

Law #5 - Sprint Once in a While:Occasional all-out sprints turbo-charge fat reduction and deliver a boost of anti-aging hormones.

Law #6 - Get Plenty of Sleep:Align your sleep with your circadian rhythm by minimizing artificial light and digital stimulation after dark, and creating a calm, quiet, dark sleeping sanctuary. Optimal sleep promotes healthy immune, brain, and endocrine function.

Law #7 - Play:Balance the stress of modern life with some unstructured, physical fun! Both brief breaks and grand outings are essential to nurture a cognitively fluid mind and a free spirit.

Law #8 - Get Plenty of Sunlight:Expose large skin surface areas frequently to optimize vitamin D production (increases energy, prevents cancer). Maintain a slight tan, but never burn. Diet alone doesn’t cut it.

Law #9 - Avoid Stupid Mistakes:Learn to be mindful and vigilant against dangers, both extreme and routine. Cultivate risk management skills to stay safe and sensible and eliminate “avoidable suffering.”

Law #10 - Use Your Brain:Engage in creative and stimulating activities away from your core daily responsibilities. This will keep you refreshed, energized, creative, and productive in everything you do.

Review

There are many different ways to approach wellbeing, and The Primal Blueprint makes lifestyle change simple, doable, and sustainable. It feels like the reader cannot fail because the principles are common-sense and open-ended.

Katy Bowman, Nutritious Movement guru, author of Move Your DNA and Movement Matters

Mark Sisson is a pioneer in the evolutionary health movement and a bona fide fat-burning beast. If you want to learn from the best, The Primal Blueprint is required reading. So drop that sandwich and pick up this book. You’re going to love it!

Abel James, New York Times bestselling author of The Wild Diet and Award-Winning Host of Fat Burning Man

If I think back about books, people, and experiences that have influenced and shaped me, it’s hard to think of a book (The Primal Blueprint) and person (Mark Sisson) that have had greater impact on my life. The Primal Blueprint was not only one of the first books on the scene with the emergence of paleo/primal/ancestral health, it has also stood the test of time. That’s pretty remarkable given how rapidly we gain new information and insights these days. Millions of people have improved their lives via Mark’s work, and I certainly count myself amongst those who live a better life because of The Primal Blueprint and Mark’s passion for all things health.

Robb Wolf, former research biochemist and New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet

The Primal Blueprint impacted the way I practice medicine more than any medical textbook or journal I've ever read. I came out of medical training ill-equipped to manage the deluge of lifestyle-induced chronic health conditions I encountered in my patients. My greatest weapon at that time was my prescription pad. The Primal Blueprint changed that completely. It not only transformed my own health, but gave me a template to help manage and actually reverse diseases in my patients. Mark masterfully weaves together complex exercise and nutrition science, ancestral health, and his profound, yet practical wisdom gained from his years of being an elite athlete and a normal human being who suffered physical and mental burnout. The result is an elegant, yet simple solution to optimal health that is now not only the gold standard in the world of health and fitness, but is also having a growing impact on physicians and health practitioners around the world.

Dr. Ronesh Sinha, author of The South Asian Health Solution and Palo Alto Medical Foundation Director of Corporate Wellness for Sutter Health in Silicon Valley

Far and away, the most important health concept in the The Primal Blueprint is that the metabolic state of burning fat is essential to normal health. We often think of exercise as a way to burn fat, but if your diet does not contain the right nutrients, you will not burn fat optimally. I regularly recommend this book to patients at my weight loss clinic―it offers a safe, sensible, and comprehensive plan for a complete lifestyle transformation. By following such recommendations for diet, exercise, and lifestyle, I have seen patients double their fat burning capacity in four weeks. Years of clinical experience has taught me that fat-burning is the biggest factor in determining long-term weight management success as well as moderation of disease risk factors.

Dr. Cate Shanahan (DrCate.com), author of Deep Nutrition and Food Rules, Science Director of the Los Angeles Lakers PRO Nutrition program

Reading The Primal Blueprint and adopting a primal lifestyle saved my life, as I was struggling with weight issues, food addictions, adrenal fatigue, and unresolved thyroid disease despite extensive medical intervention. I thought I was eating extremely healthy, and exercising optimally, but the results were exhaustion, weight gain, and blood work showing conditions of pre-diabetes and thyroid dysfunction. Going primal helped eliminate my health problems relatively quickly and easily. I became fat-adapted, energetic, healthy, happy, and free of suffering for the first time in years. If you are pre-diabetic, have extra weight to lose, or have an unhealthy relationship with food, going primal can help you break free from your struggles and promote the optimal gene expression that you deserve.

Elle Russ, author of The Paleo Thyroid Solution, host of Primal Blueprint Podcast

Mark Sisson is a natural born coach. His long career as a personal trainer and coach of elite endurance athletes has infused his Primal Blueprint message with inspiration, support, and sensitivity. As you read The Primal Blueprint, it feels like Mark is there with you every step of the way offering personal guidance and a gentle, supportive touch.

Christine Hassler, M.A., bestselling author of Expectation Hangover, keynote speaker, podcast host and Coaching Director of the Primal Health Coach certification program

Mark Sisson’s influence has extended across the globe and been a great inspiration for us in promoting the big picture of healthy eating, exercise, and lifestyle principles here in the United Kingdom. Unlike so many diet and fitness gurus with extreme, overly-stressful programs, The Primal Blueprint offers a sensible approach to lifestyle change, one that allows you to express your personal preferences and have fun along the way.

Keris Marsden and Matt Whitmore, London, England-based authors of Paleo Primer and Paleo Primer: Second Helping

Mark Sisson and The Primal Blueprint played an instrumental role in launching the ancestral health movement many years ago. I notice in my functional medicine practice that many people respond to simple lifestyle changes that honor our evolutionary development―doing things like ditching grains, sugars, and refined vegetable oils, consuming more nutrient-dense plant and animal foods, getting sensible exercise instead of overdoing it, and placing more emphasis on sleep. The Primal Blueprint covers all the bases to leading a healthy lifestyle. It’s at the top of my recommended reading list for anyone interested in reclaiming their health with diet and lifestyle change.

Chris Kresser, author of The Paleo Cure and Your Personal Paleo Code, and Co-director and President of California Center for Functional Medicine

As a former professional athlete like Mark Sisson, I understand how pursuing competitive athletic goals can actually compromise your health instead of support it. The Primal Blueprint helped me reframe my perspective about what being healthy really mean and helped me embrace a broader perspective of fitness. Mark is a guy who has been there and done that; his credibility is excellent, as is his research to support his ideas. If you are looking to get healthy and fit, then get The Primal Blueprint.

Lewis Howes, New York Times bestselling author of School of Greatness and host of the School of Greatness Podcast

I’ve known Mark Sisson personally for many years and watched him shape and inspire the burgeoning primal/paleo/evolutionary health movement. Unlike many health and fitness leaders, Mark is open, approachable, and focused on the community instead of being dogmatic. He has the respect of everyone from those first encounters at speaking events to the leading scientists, medical experts, and elite athletes in the health world. The Primal Blueprint is a great way to get an easy-to-read comprehensive education on primal living.

Wow. What an update on the first edition. This thing is loaded with updates. While it is close to the first edition, it is upgraded in all the right ways. The extra sidebars and graphs are great. Plus Sisson links to other great work being done in the field in related areas, like Katy Bowman, Kelly Staret, and Phil Maffetone. This is a complete reference for all things health and wellness.
