incomplete coverage

i was/am looking for an indepth price and value guide. this book is pretty but not complete at all. i reccommend the Official Lladro Collection Identification Catalog and Price Guide by Dr. Glenn Johnson for serious collectors. If you can find it! Try Baron Rolen Jewelers in Stone Mtn. Ga.

Wow, I'm really surprised by the other reviews

I received this book the first day it was published and finished it that night. I have since looked back on it a couple of dozen times. The pictures are wonderfully done and in color which is a very nice change from the black and white of the official price guide. The author has a love for Lladros that shows throughout the book. I learned a great deal from this book. The section on fakes was incredibly enlightening and will prove to be helpful if I ever run across one. The section about if a restoration is worth while was certainly a eye opener. There are pictures of all the marks Lladro has used over the years and when they used them. It was very interesting to find out that my collection consists of only two different artists' work. That was an aspect of collecting Lladro's I had never thought of before but certainly found my collection reflects it. I did not find it to be an advertisement for dealers in any way. There are several listed at the end of the book but I didn't see them throughout the book at all. In fact I found the sections on buying from retailers, brokers or auctions to be very unbiased and in no way leaning toward any certain dealer or broker. If anything I walked away from the book knowing that I would not buy from a broker unless I had a specific need that would make the added expense worthwhile for me. Well, to each their own I suppose but I cannot imagine someone who truly read this book coming away with the comments below. I found the book well worth the price and expect to refer to it again and again for many year.

About the Author
Charles Webster Leadbeater (1847-1934) was a Church of England clergyman until he joined the Theosophical Society in 1883. He spent some years in Sri Lanka working for the revival of Buddhism, and later became the Presiding Bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church, which seeks to combine the preservation of the Catholic sacraments with the widest measure of freedom of thought and interpretation of the scriptures. He was a highly developed clairvoyant and the author of over thirty books on the spiritual life and on the psychic nature of man. He unfolded and perfected his own psychic faculties under the guidance of his Adept teacher and in 1893 began his clairvoyant investigations, on occasion collaborating with Annie Besant, the second President of the Theosophical Society. His worldwide lectures presented a new viewpoint to thousands of people.

Excellent work

This book is a wonderful summary of the blending between Theosophy and Christianity that Leadbetter facilitated. While one may have slightly different views than he did, his explanations and discussions are well worth contemplating and provide excellent sources for meditation. Leadbetter also has a very nice writing style that is easy to read without having to decipher what it is he's trying to say. I highly recommend this work for all seekers who are of a Christian slant.

This book is a combination theosophist and gnostic retake on Christianity. If you are a believer in psychic methods of researching hidden history, if you believe that there is Christian truth that can be reached by "sensitives", and that truth corrects the Christian theology/traditions that have been passed on for most of two millennia, you might love this book. If you're a traditional Christian with even fairly orthodox views, the re-defining of Christian vocabulary and of Jesus may offend you or you might find yourself rolling your eyes at it. If you're a Christian Fundamentalist, Evangelical, strong Catholic, etc., than this book might, for you, be filled with intolerable heresy. CW Leadbeater is quite the storyteller. If no word he wrote had any truth to it, than it could be said that he is a most imaginative storyteller. Personally, I am not convinced by his writings. I believe that Christianity, as a revealed religion whose most major event took place in the public square is an exoteric religion, not an esoteric one. For example, I don't believe that person Jesus allowed himself to be a host body for a disembodied master, and that this was a secret to almost everybody for nearly the whole history of Christianity. Actually, to be quite honest, if you're an orthodox believer, this book comes across as just weird and random.

The logos

This is a decent work by C.W.
It's leadbeaters collected works on christianity really.
Now mind you leadbeater didn't have a nag hammadi library he died before the discovery . He simply uses the new testament ( the four gospels and the letters of Paul as well as the apostles creed ) he also offers soem commentary on the fragments of the gospel of Thomas ( he didn't know they were the gospel of Thomas he knew them as a fragments of a unknown gospel ) and i find his commentary rewarding.
But the whole book reminded me of his other work " masters and the path" . i felt he was rehashing his thoughts on indian mysticism here .
He gives a lot of space to the " logos" and what it means. Now Most translations of the word " logos" is wrong it has so many meanings to say it means just "word" is just one small part of its meaning. its a complex word and Leadbeaters attempts to explain in his own way.
ALL IN ALL C.W. leadbeater was a brilliant man .
why 4 stars? my issue was the lack of diversity in pictures. the same picture form the cover is used to segment off chapters of the book it gets tedious .

Hot Time on the Rail

The first of a proposed series, Hot Rail To Hell, was published a few years ago by Robert Vardeman as an attempt to revive the mens' action novels of the 1970′s. Vardeman heads the Baroness Yahoo group and dedicated it to her creator, Lyle Kenyon Engel. Although we haven't been blessed with another book in this "Conversant USA" series, one can always hope. Digital publishing makes the job a lot easier these days. Vardeman lists many other books in his resume, so he has the chops to keep the ball rolling.
the action hero of Hot Rail is known as Vanessa Court, a 5-6″ 125 pound streamlined ball of energy. Known as "Nessie" to her friends and employees, she runs Conversant USA, a company dedicated to eliminating industrial espionage. The book introduces her as she goes one-on-one with a Brazilian jujitsu fighter under the guidance of her mentor, Tancredo Cardoso, AKA "Dodo". It;s a tightly choreographed scene and Nessie ends up with her clothes ripped away, but her opponent needs an ambulance. Nothing like a naked woman introduction to grab your attention.

We soon find out that Nessie has a very desperate client. A government contractor has had the rail gun he's contracted to develop by the US Navy to fail catastrophically in a desert test. The nano-tube powered rail gun managed to launch the package as planned, but the exploded immediately afterward. Is someone being payed to sabotage the gun? Could it be the sexist pig scientist Hugo Flynn who's needed for the project? The Hispanic woman head technician who quit over harassment? Or might it be the chief of security? It's up to Nessie and her crack team to find out.

The trail leads from a desert installation to Hong Kong. Along the way, Nessie has encounters with a virtual reality sex machine, being left for dead in the desert, and foreign agents. The trail ends up in China.

As with all hero pulps, Nessie has her team to assist her. Always on stand-by is Kate Li, a Chinese American computer specialist Next is Rich Blaine, a twentysomething engineer. He's followed by an Indian cybernaut, Web Singh. Dodo, the martial artist has been mentioned. Completing the ensemble is her trusty canine friend Pascal, a specially trained German Shepard. And, naturally, she has her own satellite in orbit which communicates with her smart phone.

The book is a lot of fun and you can tell Vardeman had a blast writing it. It's the only one of his works I've read, so I can't compare it to the other books in his resume. If I have one criticism, it's the bad guys. They sound right out of central casting, circa 1965. Check out the main Chinese spy:

"Such arrogance! The ancient Greeks called it hubris. You, a mere mortal, seek godlike power. How funny. You are the product of a decadent country but still think you control power. You are failures, you and your imperialist country, yet your precious self-esteem is overweening. You do not give orders to me!"

There's a number of explicit sex scenes as well. As a bonus, the deluxe edition comes with a separate Vanessa Court story and an excerpt from one of Vardeman's other novels. The postscript is a delight to read: the author talks a lot about his love for the Baroness series and 70′s action novels. This novel is recommended for fans of all those great paperback books which lined the spin racks at bus stations forty years ago.

Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12th, 1817 on Virginia Road in Concord, Massachusetts. Eventually his published writings were to celebrate this area and his own philosophies. A noted Abolitionist Thoreau was a man to stand by his principles regardless of the minority view he might be holding. Tragically his life and career were short. In 1859, following a late-night excursion to count the rings of tree stumps during a rain storm, he fell ill with bronchitis. His health now fell into an irreversible decline with only short periods of remission. Thoreau spent his last years revising and editing his unpublished works. In the decades that followed he would be regarded as one of America’s greatest writers. Henry David Thoreau died on May 6th, 1862 at the tragically early age of just 44.

Walden

On my short list of all time favorite books, this one is up there at the top. It doesn't attain the #1 spot, but it's up there, definitely top five.

I think it is very interesting to read the reviews and notice that the vast majority of the bad reviews are coming from the young, mainly teenagers who were made to read this in school. The vast majority of the good reviews are coming from the older and the more wizened.

I think the youth of today are just so totally enamored with technology and what's cool and popular. I know I was when I was 17. But then you grow older and hopefully more wise, you live life a little and you no longer care about what's cool or what's popular, you are no longer so enamored with technology and you begin to see how technology is actually killing us. You have some perspective to temper the youthful idealism.

I just loved everything about this book, but I never read it until my 30's. If I had read it in my teens, I probably would have thought it pretty stupid.

I think Thoreau was a genius, both with words and how he lived his life. He did not live on Walden Pond his entire life, by the way. Walden pond was an experiment, not so much a way of life. His time there was meant to show people how superfluous most of our lives are, that it can be simplified, to our soul's benefit, not to mention the benefit of our fellow human beings and the world at large.

He was not a stupid man, he was educated at Harvard. He knew that his way was not the way everyone could or would live. He was not advocating a new social order. He was merely trying to prove a point, that people's lives are way too complicated.

It has been said that Thoreau was the anti-Benjamin Franklin. Realize that even in his day, Thoreau was ridiculed. It is no surprise that he would be ridiculed today, mainly by those who just simply could not live without their iPods.
I read Walden as an ideal and it made me sad. I would love to live my life in the way he did on Walden Pond, but I'm just not so sure how possible it is to live that way in today's world or even how desirable. There has to be a happy medium. You don't have to run out and live as a hermit in order to be able to appreciate Thoreau. There is beauty in the middle way, one can learn to make small changes in their lives, to try and live more simply, as many today are trying to do, to lighten our footprint on this earth, for the betterment of all.

I do believe that people's lives are too complicated, that they can't see the forest for the trees,that their lives are only about making more money so they can buy more things. They have lost their way in the world, they have forgotten, if they even even knew, what life is about.

But running out to live by yourself is not the solution either. I am reminded of the story of Christopher McCandless, whose story was made into the movie Into the Wild. He learned too late that true happiness is not real unless shared. That without love, life is meaningless. And THAT is the reason that living on Walden Pond by yourself is not the answer. We are here on this earth for each other, to love. Without love, life is meaningless.

To live on Walden Pond by yourself for a period of time, to find yourself, or to prove a point, is all well and good, but as a permanent way of life, it's not utopia.

And Thoreau knew this, after his time in the woods, he went back to civilization, but he never lost his soul and he knew how the soul was refreshed... with love, with learning, and with nature.

Missing quotes

Besides irritating formatting issues (as Mr. Wiggings mentioned in his review), I got over a quarter way through before realizing that the quotes are missing! I'd see many lines that just seemed to end with half a thought and a comma or double-dash, with nothing to punctuate his statement (price, poem, song, etc.). I just grabbed the MOBI version from Project Gutenberg ([...]) and everything seems to be in order. However be aware that THAT version has no table of contents (DOH!).

So ... it's free, yes, but you're missing out on key elements of the book if you download this.

Wisdom from a Dead White Guy.

Astonishingly enough feminists and snowflakes could learn something from this book, something called tolerance and perhaps compassion. Thoreau's observations on life and self-reflection are more profound and wiser than all the rant and cant blaring and whining on the media today. His observations on the racial situation concerning the pre- Civil War era are sad and disturbing. Disturbing in that there were slaves in Massachusetts as well in his time. Mainly what one should hopefully glean from this volume is to seek self -knowledge and to come to terms with one's self. Be honest and true to yourself before you dictate to society.

About the Author
"Krishna K. Havaldar is a Professor at the School of Business, Alliance University, Bangalore. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad and a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pune. Professor Havaldar has been a member of All India Management Association and has also served as the Dean at the Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME), Bangalore, and as the Principal at the RJS Institute of Management Studies, Bangalore. Prior to his career in academia, Professor Havaldar worked in the companies such as Blue Star Ltd, Crompton Greaves Ltd and Kirloskar Consultants for more than three decades in various capacities—starting from service engineer, area sales manager, regional marketing manager to marketing manager, general manager and vice-president. He has a number of publications and case studies to his credit and has also authored Business Marketing: Text and Cases, which is now in its third edition. Professor Havaldar devotes his leisure time to yoga and meditation and prefers spending quality time with his family. Cricket is his another leisure interest. He had indeed played Ranji Trophy Tournament for Maharashtra."

Nanni Moretti’s films are not as well known in the US as they should be. His is an important body of work that follows in the footsteps of the great Italian neorealists and French New Wave filmmaker Eric Rohmer. Moretti (b. 1953) is much better known and acclaimed in his native Italy and across Europe, but this study by Andrews should bring more American viewers to his work. Andrews’s book, which grew from her dissertation, is only the second on Moretti available in English—after Ewa Mazierska and Laura Rascaroli's The Cinema of Nanni Moretti(CH, Dec'04, 42-2112)—and it does much to advance the scholarship on this director. As the title indicates, Andrews focuses on the significance of spaces in Moretti’s films. . . .Andrews organized her discussion around the different kinds of spaces—interior, exterior, thresholds, domestic, and so on—in the films and the relationships between spaces and themes and characters. Particularly strong are the chapters on Moretti's cinematic narrators as connected to perspective and on Moretti’s use of different settings and their connections to film genre.
