Well Written Book

I enjoyed the main character in the novel, I identified with her rebelliousness and struggle for independence. The supporting characters did just that, support, without being overwhelming. The book was contemporary without being "street".
I didn't find any cons. The only thing that ate at me was "if Phillip was creole why wasn't he Phillipe?"
Overall I believe the book was well written, it was enjoyable and I would read the author again. I read it twice and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family. Don't let the cover or the "Goldigger Series" fool you, it is a good read.

Wish I'd like it more

I really wanted to like Can't Stand the Heat and I did, initially. As the chapters went on, however, I began losing interest. I don't know . . . there just seemed to be something missing. I guess it was that the book's description sounded more salacious than the story actually turned out to be. The writing itself was stellar, though. It was refreshing to read a book not full of grammar and punctuation errors. For that reason I bumped it up another star.

Even from the start of her debut, Shelly Ellis is a knockout!

Shelly Ellis' phenomenal debut, Can't Stand the Heat, is the first book in a four book serial about the four Gibbons sisters-Lauren, Stephanie, Dawn, and Cynthia- who in addition to having their own careers, use men to extort money from them to contribute to their extravagant and luxurious lifestyles, thus earning them the reputation in the fictional small town of Chesterton, Virginia as being labeled "gold diggers."
The series kicks off right with Can't Stand the Heat which introduces the youngest sister, Lauren, who has decided she wants no part in the family business after being involved in an abusive relationship with her controlling boyfriend James. She trades in her life of luxury (and unhappiness with him) and starts from scratch with a job as sous chef at Le Bayou Bleu, a Creole restaurant run by her flamboyant boss, Phillip. As she attempts to find her own identity and separate herself from her family's business, James threatens to blackmail her and make her repay every bit of her family's debt if she doesn't come back to him. In another storyline, the arrival of retired pro NFL star, Cristano Weaver, is the talk of the town. The men can't wait to do business with him and the women can't wait to woo him with promises of sex, attractive looks, and seduction. But in a chance encounter with Lauren while dining at Le Bayou Bleu, Cristano who isn't privy to her family's history decides she's who he's willing to be with and he'll stop at nothing to ensure their happily ever after.
From start to finish, the book is fast-paced drama and Ellis does a great job of showing the reading the story instead of telling them. The only thing that prevented me from rating this book five stars were the minor grammar errors I noticed, that James didn't seem to get what he deserved, and that the designer name brands of clothes and cars were dropped every other page, or so it seemed. I get that's the lifestyle the family lived but once Ellis made that clear, I didn't feel she needed to keep spoon feeding that to her readers. Nevertheless, Ellis has become a favorite of mine and I look forward to read the remaining books in this series (The Player & the Game is on my bookshelf, and once I've finished with that I will be purchasing the 2014 NAACP Image Award-nominated Another Woman's Man, for that very reason). I highly recommend this novel.
