Joan Elliot does it again!

This book is full of great surprises. My favorites are the Sea Goddess (mermaid) and the Woodland Goddess. It is hard to see from the cover that the book has such wonderful and detailed patterns. There is a really lovely Victorian Ladies floral sampler, too.

I almost gave this a miss, based on the cover. I didn't want to buy a book of only small patterns. I saw an excerpt of the Sea Goddess in a British cross stitch magazine and decided that cost effectiveness would be to buy this book instead. Once I received it and saw the variety of the size and types of patterns, I was very glad to have bought it.

I picked this up after seeing some of Joan's work in Cross Stitching magazines.
I love the variety of sized charts and the cheeky nature of the designs. Bright fun designs. Appealing to a younger generation of cross stitchers!

Joan Elliot is my favorite cross stitching artist. This book doesn't disappoint. I *love* her woodland fairie, and the cute sayings throughout the book. She has another CS book coming out soon and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

My husband and I are both physicians; I work part time to take care of our 1 year old. He is still building his practice; so you can imagine our lives are a bit hectic. The book gave us a better perspective on what each other is going through in terms of stressors. An Invitation to laugh at ourselves

It's hard to believe these stories are not scripted by Hollywood. People say the funniest things. I am so glad Sevilla wrote this book after such a long break. As Sevilla points out ,most people don't think of the law as a fertile source of humor.But even in the courtroom, humor pops up unexpectedly. A great read and one in which you can put it down and then pick up again when you could use a good laugh. Enjoy this invitation to laugh at ourselves.

Funny!

As an attorney, I found a lot of the stories in his books very funny. I even knew one of the hapless people whose courtroom verbal entanglement was in one of the books! I keep them in my conference room, for clients to enjoy when I delayed in getting in there with them.

A practicable work on closed-system sustainability.

I confess my excitement about this book because it goes much further than any to date in its prescription for long-term sustainability. This book covers an area of sustainability that has not been addressed by many, with the exception of Cradle to Cradle, in that it distinguishes sustainability from delayed resource depletion. Recycle Everything is unique however, because it is a play book that defines the systems, processes, roles and challenges to be met to achieve long-term sustainability. I believe this book is a must-read for anyone interested in sustainability and green business practices.

Recycle Everything throws down the gauntlet on the current unsustainable production system that supplies all the goods to the economy. This system consumes resources until they are exhausted and for this reason cannot be sustainable. The book asserts that efforts such as life cycle assessment and similar methods only delay the inevitable, an economic decline. The book goes on to illustrate and provide examples of a cyclical system that retains within itself all the materials used in production. The cyclical system is called a "system for material sustainability", which circulates goods or their constituent materials among several roles including the manufacturer, consumer, disassembler, materials re-processor and others. The system is a closed system that eliminates extraction of new materials and their subsequent disposal.

The book is predicated on the notion that, for the manufacturing industry, resource depletion is a more urgent motivation to become sustainable than protection of the environment. The author discusses reasons to be concerned about approaching material scarcity and recommends closer scrutiny of the materials used in production and the issues related to their availability. The book redefines sustainability as the "ability to continue human production and consumption indefinitely within the limitations of a finite Earth." The intent of the book is to make sustainability "operational" through its "systems for material sustainability".

Although the book focuses mainly on inorganic materials (e.g., metals, glass, plastics), organic materials (e.g., cotton, wood) used in such things as clothing, some kinds of furnishings and food waste are also accounted for. Organic materials pass through a phase of composting and return to field and forest to replenish the soil for the cultivation of more organic products. All of the systems, both organic and inorganic, are illustrated in the book.

The book raises the issue that the inorganic materials are created for a single use and due to their chemical composition, cannot be reused to make new products. These single-use materials must be replaced by materials that are "perpetually reusable," a term coined in the book. These new materials would be recovered and reused to manufacture new products, into the distant future. It remains to be seen whether this is achievable simply because all materials decay; however, it may be possible to reconstitute them in some way and return them to production. The author leaves these issues to research and development and to this end, she has begun an institute dedicated to engaging scientists in resolving them.

This book describes the processes used in the new sustainable systems in enough detail that those in manufacturing and related industries can actually apply them. There are no doubt issues that will emerge with the plan offered in this book however, I share the author's confidence in human ingenuity and believe that the issues can be resolved. This book offers real, practicable hope for sustainability and I highly recommend it.

Wonderful as always

Pelecanos is my favorite writer. A great friend of mine ( a history teacher) turned me on to him while I was an Assistant Principal over ten years ago. I've been reading him ever since. Martini Shot was Outstanding!!

A Glimpse Into Pelacanos' Universe

Pelacanos grew up in D.C. and his books are filled with urban grittiness and the dialogues he heard growing up in his father's diner. "The Martini Shot" is his first collection of shorts, seven short stories and the title novella. Many of these stories have been published before, just not together as a collection.

These stories share a sad, grittiness of life in the big city and are filled with rich, deep characters like the police snitch who thinks he found his calling, but still lives in his ailing father's house compared to his successful brother. They are filled with characters like the couple who wanted a companion for their only child and couldn't stop adopting kids and wondered if they lived successful lives.

Other stories are about guys playing pickup basketball, trying to determine how to act tough, but not get killed in the process. There are also stories about guys who absconded to South America and guys who get caught back home and wonder who they can trust.

"Martini Shot" is the last shot of the day before you take a break from filming and head out for martinis. This story is a change of pace and location for Pelecanos taking his storytelling out of the city streets and urban world onto a Hollywood film set with directors making time with crew members and petty disputes among the stars and, oh yeah, there's a body. This story is a bit underwhelming compared to the others in this collection, but it does show the range of this author.

Overall, this is a fine collection and should appeal to Pelacanos' fans and those looking to take a peek at his D.C. world.

A Strong Collection of Stories That Adds to the Author's Great Body of Work!

Pelecanos is undeniably one of my favorite authors, so of course I had to jump headfirst into this newly-released collection of his short fiction, although I was already familiar with some of the stories. Fellow fans of the author will find many of his usual strengths on display here: his knack for creating flawed but sympathetic characters, his way with dialogue, and the potent atmosphere that he's able to convey in his urban D.C. environments.

One of the best examples of this is the first story in the collection, and possibly one of Pelecanos's best pieces, "The Confidential Informant." It's about an aging nobody who still lives with his parents, and becomes a CI for a local detective. It's a tale filled with an air of sadness, as the main character is still desperate for his parent's approval and he believes that he's finally found his calling as a snitch. Another story that's just as good, "String Music," follows a teen streetball player, who struggles to find a balance between being tough and being smart on the street. It was also refreshing reading "String Music" during the current atmosphere in the U.S. between the public and police officers. The character of Sergeant Peters is everything that a good cop should be. He's in touch with the community that he polices and has a relationship with people there. So instead of seeing the neighborhood as a place to flex his power and bust heads, he sees it as a place to protect. So kudos to Pelecanos for writing a cop character that can stand as an example for the real ones. These two stories feature some of the best writing that he has done.

One of the things that's always struck me about Pelecanos is the fact that he's probably the only non-black novelist who has a talent for constantly writing complex, honest, and fully realized black characters from the inner city. This can be credited not only to the fact that he's lived all of his life in "Chocolate City," but to what seems to be an acute sensitivity to the people and world around him. It's something I've noticed in all of his work. He can be described the same way the social worker in the short story "Chosen" describes Van and Eleni Lucas (Spero Lucas's adopted parents), who adopt two African-American boys: he never feels over-earnest, or trying too hard to be multicultural. His work feels genuine, unlike someone like Quentin Tarantino, who always seems to be trying too hard.

Most of the stories are solid, with the title novella being the weak link. The story is filled with tons of unnecessary detail about the inner workings of a movie set, to the point where most readers would lose interest. I got a kick out of it because I work in that industry and it was fun to see it written very accurately, but it did make the story much longer than it needed to be. At first, I couldn't understand the main character's motivations for looking into the death of another crew member, but by the end, his motivations are revealed and they're pretty interesting. The ending was satisfying, but the novella would have made a better short story.

I wouldn't recommend readers new to Pelecanos to start here, but it's a great, necessary addition to his work and would definitely recommend it to fans.

About the Author
Arthur O'Sullivan is a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his B.S. in economics at the University of Oregon, he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working with city planners in the Philippines. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1981 and has taught at the University of California, Davis, and Oregon State University, winning several teaching awards at both schools. He recently accepted an endowed professorship at Lewis and Clark College, where he teaches microeconomics and urban economics. He is the author of the best-selling textbook, "Urban Economic"s, currently in its sixth edition. Professor O'Sullivan's research explores economic issues concerning urban land use, environmental protection, and public policy. His articles have appeared in many economics journals, including the" Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, National Tax Journal, Journal of Public Economics, "and" Journal of Law and Economics." Professor O'Sullivan lives with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. For recreation, he enjoys hiking, boogie-boarding, paragliding, and squash. Steven M. Sheffrin is dean of the division of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics and has served as a financial economist with the Office of Tax Analysis of the United States Department of Treasury. He has been on the faculty of the University of California, Davis, since 1976 and has served as the chairman of the department of economics. He received his B.A. fromWesleyan University and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Sheffrin is the author of 10 other books and monographs and over 100 articles in the fields of macroeconomics, public finance, and international economics. His most recent books include "Rational Expectations" (second edition) and "Property Taxes and Tax Revolts: The Legacy of Proposition 13" (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri Sexton). Professor Sheffrin has taught macroeconomics at all levels, from large introduction to principles classes (enrollments of 400) to graduate classes for doctoral students. He is the recipient of the Thomas Mayer Distinguished Teaching Award in economics. He lives with his wife Anjali (also an economist) in Davis, California, and has two daughters who have studied economics. In addition to a passion for current affairs and travel, he plays a tough game of tennis. Stephen Perez is chair of the economics department at California State University, Sacramento. After receiving his B.A. in economics at the University of California, San Diego, he received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Davis, in 1994. He taught economics at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington State University before coming to California State University, Sacramento, in 2001. He teaches macroeconomics at all levels as well as econometrics, sports economics, labor economics, and mathematics for economists.
Professor Perez's research explores most macroeconomic topics. In particular, he is interested in evaluating the ability of econometric techniques to discover the truth, issues of causality in macroeconomics, and sports economics. His articles haveappeared in many economics journals, including the "Journal of Monetary Economics," "Econometrics Journal," "Economics Letters," "Journal of Economic Methodology," "Public Finance and Management," "Journal of Economics and Business," "Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics," "Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Applied Economics," and "Journal of Macroeconomics."

Steven M. Sheffrin is a Professor of Economics and the Executive Director of the Murphy Institute at Tulane University. He is the author and co-author of several books, including Property Taxes and Tax Revolts (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri A. Sexton, Cambridge University Press, 2007) and Rational Expectations, 2nd edition (Cambridge University Press, 1996). His articles have appeared in numerous scholarly journals, including the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the National Tax Journal, the Journal of International Economics, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Monetary Economics, and the International Economic Review. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
