Don't buy this definition paperback for the exorbitant price

This book is nothing more than a definition book. I would say it's worth is about $5 to $10. It is ridiculous to sell this book for over $50. Amazon should state what it is.... A very concise book of clinical terms defined. I am returning it for a refund.

James is excellent, this edition is fine

I highly recommend Psychology: the briefer course to anyone who might be interested in the foundations of modern psychology. The work is very accessible, the style very straightforward, and the content far from dry or textbookish. The experience is definitely enhanced if one is familiar with some of the basic tenets of early modern thinkers (especially those like Kant and Hegel), but this knowledge is in no way required to enjoy James. He is treating psychology as a natural science, but it is important to understand that beyond this book James is a broad-ranging thinker, and so his Psychology dips its toes in many other fields of philosophy, and some fields not at all treated by philosophers (as, for example, the section at the end of Chapter 3 where he describes his experiences with spiritual mediums).

The book itself is printed well enough, and contains no extraneous material (introductory essays from some scholar, intrusive footnotes, chapter analyses, etc.), just the way I like it.

An abridged version of a classic 19th century textbook

Psychology: The briefer course by William James, Henry Holt, 1892; Harper and Row, 1961; Dover, 2001, 368 ff.

This is a simpler, less detailed version of William James' Principles of Psychology that was published in two volumes. William James was one of the founders of the subject and was both psychologist and philosopher. In this book he covers many of the classic topics that are of interest to both psychologists and lay people with his perceptive views presented in an accessible style that makes his writing easy to read for the non-specialist.

Thus he writes about habit, the stream of consciousness, the self, (mental) conception, association, memory, emotion, will, and other issues in an original and enlightening way. His views on habit underlie Rupert Sheldrake's principle of the morphic field in the way that events in the material world become easier when they are repeated. His thoughts on will or voluntary attention provided the inspiration for Jeffrey Schwartz and Henry Stapp's view of the mechanism of mind - that it was the act of volition that constituted free will, to focus on just one of the ripples in the stream of consciousness.

James uses the life of a bird as a metaphor for the human stream of consciousness, comprising flights and perchings. Only the `perchings' or substantive states of mind as James calls them contribute to knowledge and memory. He points out that our recognition of our `self' depends upon the success of our social relationships with others, particularly the esteem with which we are held in the minds of loved ones. There are some interesting reflections on the mental continuity of the self, despite physical changes to the body.
This book is at the same readable academic level as James' books on The Variety of Religious Experience and Pragmatism, but is likely to appeal to a wider readership - to anyone in fact who is interested in human nature. There are so many pearls of wisdom here for a book written more than a century ago, and intimations of things that subsequent neurologists with a battery of sophisticated equipment have shown to be correct.

Dover edition is the best

Like most of James's books, Psychology: The Briefer Course has been released by several publishers and I have most of them. But I prefer the Dover edition because the book does not have one of those prefaces that robs the reader of discovering James for him or herself and because this edition gives you more bang for the buck.

Russian literature

This is simply a collection of great Russian literary works - from Dostoevsky, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chehov (I may be missing an author or two) - in Russian. Yes, the text within is not in English, but in the original Russian form. I would recommend this anyone of mid to advanced level Russian proficiency, as on the margins of the texts it clarifies the meaning of many antiquated Russian words and phrases, and also provides a few definitions of some non-traditional words. These works are also much more beautiful to read in Russian than in English, however that may be a personal bias of mine. English translation tends to ruin most literature that has origins elsewhere. Either way, it is worth reading these authors in their original form if you have the ability.

For him this was the physical event of birth, whereby the infant passes from a state of perfectly contented union with the mother to a state of parlous separation via an oppressive experience of asphyxiation, constriction, confinement in the vaginal canal, and so on-all feelings recognizable in anxiety states of every kind. It was the struggle against this traumatic experience of birth, in Rank's account, that structured the fantasy life of the child, including the disavowal of the difference between the sexes, infantile sexual theories, and oedipal scenarios. Castration anxiety was a defensive derivative of the anxiety associated with the birth trauma.

Robert A. Segal, Ph.D., is a professor of religious studies at Lancaster University, and a renowned authority on mythology.

A key book in the history of psychotherapy

The Dover edition, now out of print, contains an introduction by E. James Lieberman*, biographer of Otto Rank (_Acts of Will_) and co-translator of Rank's _Psychology and the Soul_(1998). This work marks the break between Rank and Freud; written in 1924, it established the mother-child relationship as the central focus in human development. People forget that Freud's psychology was father-centered. Some critics feel that Rank exaggerated the birth trauma in the physical sense, but his thesis is about separation and individuation, now mainstream concepts (cf. Mahler, Bowlby, Erikson). Freud initially praised the book as the best thing since the invention of psychoanalysis--but then he backed away; in 1926 Rank left Vienna for Paris and then New York.

This little book has big ideas about our need to merge and the various ways we spend our lives defending against that original loss and its infinite repetitions throughout life. Rank, shunned by Freud, was a thinker of the top order, popularized by the brilliant Ernest Becker in the 70s, and well worth reading in his original form.

One of the greatest books on child development and trauma every penned. Rank was the secretary of Sigmund Freud who went on to become a great psychologist and thinker in his own right. Many of his ideas, expressed in this classic work, undermine those of his mentor Freud. Indeed the book caused the break between he and Freud. Rank's ideas also serve to undermine most of Jung's central concepts.

Some of Rank's ideas bear a resemblance to those of the philosopher Martin Heidegger, and he is certainly in the same league as Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, Arthur Janov, John Bowlby, Wilhelm Reich, George Groddeck, Boris Sidis, Erich Neumann and others who developed the ideas of Freud and Jung.

Good introduction to database programming

If you are new to Delphi *and* database programming, this book will ease you into some simple applications and provide a general overview of Delphi programming.Despite being a tad redundant in it's explantions, the authors manage to get enough useful information into this modestly sized volume. For more advanced Delphi database programmers that have all the standard texts (ie Henderson's, Swan's, Leif's et al) , 'Kick Ass Delphi...' provides some interesting peeks into the professional world of coding...

too good to be bad?

I received this book for an honest review.
Olivia is a good girl who is working for her step father's company the summer before heading off to college. Figuring she's getting a head start on others with an internship pre-college she's excited that is until she finds out who her boss will be. Kaleb is a womanizing bad boy tasked with a project as a way to show is father he can one day take over the company, the issue is he's not sure he ever wants to run the company. What he is sure of is he does want the hot little intern his father assigned him, the only issue? She's his step sister....
This was a fun quick little read. I enjoyed Kaleb attitude and controlling personality and Olivia is sweet and endearing. My criticisms is that there are editing issues and that the flow between some of the scenes was a little rough. This is not a standalone and is part one in a series.

This was a sexy, hot story - especially if you like those of the step-sibling variety. They are not my favorite stories but this one was pretty good overall. This is part one of a series so you will need to read more to get the whole story.

Wasn't to bad but it did seam to stop in a few places but other then that it was a good short part 1. Olivia worked her whole life to get into Yale but when the letter came she felt her whole life went down the drain, until her stepmother came and comfort her on her misery. Caleb is you typical bad boy/jock but being a son of a multi millionaire and the heir to the fortune and business he didn't want anything but the money. When his sister needs a comforting hand he didn't expect the response that he got from his body or the thoughts that starting to spring up. Olivia and Kaleb will discover their true feelings towards one another.
