The translation is so-so

I bought this for my Spanish-speaking husband because I really love the English version so much. He has complained that the Spanish looks like it came from an online translator and that it wasn't edited or proofed. He said that it gets the ideas across, but that he is constantly distracted by the poor translation. I am very disappointed.

should cherish the style as Japanese too

I am a man that lives in Tokyo, the metropolitan of Japan. Recently in about thirty years, Japanese living styles have changed extremely, that is, the styles are getting to be foreign styles, the windows: not Syouji, tables: not Tyabudai, floorings: not tatami and so on. Especially in big city like Tokyo, Oosaka and Nagoya the tendency is plain. Though there will be the many reasons that recent Japan have gotten to be such situations, recent Japanese especially young men may wish such cool design like European style, for instance, a data was reported a few years ago, the length of foots per over-all body height of Japanese students have gotten to be long, some specialists of the genre say that the cause will be that young men use chairs of styles that stretch their legs, not the Seiza style that have existed from long ago. Off course the cause may be by other aspects like abundant foods. But I approve about the opinion of specialists too.

Certainly though the old Japanese living styles are disappearing in big cities, if we go to local towns or villages, there will be many traditional style house. Now, some people (especially the adults over 40 years old) who are living in big cities like Tokyo lived and sent in such traditional house style of local towns for their boys or girls age. After all when they got to be about 20 years old, they went out from the towns and went to Tokyo etc because they yearned for the fashions or convenience of Tokyo.

They become businessmen, when they take long vacations of summer or new-year some of them go back to their towns or villages of their home countries. And they say then "the most comfortable place is my hometown and house after all". Off course the their saying may be because they are released from daily stress like hard working, but I think that another reason exists, that is, Japanese traditional house styles may give the influences to such feeling.

For instance, when they see garden (Teien) they will be calm, that is not always the scenery, though foreigners do not know about that, Tatami generates slight natural smell because Tatami is made from grass (Igusa). So when they sleep by Futon style on Tatami directly (not bed style in many cases of local town), they feel the slight smell from Tatami, and feel nostalgia as if they go back to their child age.

Since I have been in Tokyo from my birth, unfortunately I have not the local hometown like them. But I feel the smell of Tatami, am very calm down.

I felt that should cherish the old styles as Japanese too.

Low-budget color print

Don't expect much content in textual form. The book is a photo book, and there are many excellent pictures of japanese houses and interiors in terms of themes and photographical skill.

What is totaly contradictory to this, is the poor low-budget color printing chosen by Tuttle publishers. The pictures are devaluated by a easily seen coarse printing sreen.

Don't buy this definition paperback for the exorbitant price

This book is nothing more than a definition book. I would say it's worth is about $5 to $10. It is ridiculous to sell this book for over $50. Amazon should state what it is.... A very concise book of clinical terms defined. I am returning it for a refund.

James is excellent, this edition is fine

I highly recommend Psychology: the briefer course to anyone who might be interested in the foundations of modern psychology. The work is very accessible, the style very straightforward, and the content far from dry or textbookish. The experience is definitely enhanced if one is familiar with some of the basic tenets of early modern thinkers (especially those like Kant and Hegel), but this knowledge is in no way required to enjoy James. He is treating psychology as a natural science, but it is important to understand that beyond this book James is a broad-ranging thinker, and so his Psychology dips its toes in many other fields of philosophy, and some fields not at all treated by philosophers (as, for example, the section at the end of Chapter 3 where he describes his experiences with spiritual mediums).

The book itself is printed well enough, and contains no extraneous material (introductory essays from some scholar, intrusive footnotes, chapter analyses, etc.), just the way I like it.

William James was one of the founders of the subject and was both psychologist and philosopher. In this book he covers many of the classic topics that are of interest to both psychologists and lay people with his perceptive views presented in an accessible style that makes his writing easy to read for the non-specialist.

Thus he writes about habit, the stream of consciousness, the self, (mental) conception, association, memory, emotion, will, and other issues in an original and enlightening way. His views on habit underlie Rupert Sheldrake's principle of the morphic field in the way that events in the material world become easier when they are repeated. His thoughts on will or voluntary attention provided the inspiration for Jeffrey Schwartz and Henry Stapp's view of the mechanism of mind - that it was the act of volition that constituted free will, to focus on just one of the ripples in the stream of consciousness.

James uses the life of a bird as a metaphor for the human stream of consciousness, comprising flights and perchings. Only the `perchings' or substantive states of mind as James calls them contribute to knowledge and memory. He points out that our recognition of our `self' depends upon the success of our social relationships with others, particularly the esteem with which we are held in the minds of loved ones. There are some interesting reflections on the mental continuity of the self, despite physical changes to the body.
This book is at the same readable academic level as James' books on The Variety of Religious Experience and Pragmatism, but is likely to appeal to a wider readership - to anyone in fact who is interested in human nature. There are so many pearls of wisdom here for a book written more than a century ago, and intimations of things that subsequent neurologists with a battery of sophisticated equipment have shown to be correct.

Dover edition is the best

Like most of James's books, Psychology: The Briefer Course has been released by several publishers and I have most of them. But I prefer the Dover edition because the book does not have one of those prefaces that robs the reader of discovering James for him or herself and because this edition gives you more bang for the buck.
