T. M. Kubiak is Quality and Productivity Executive at Bank of America. Previously he served as director of Six Sigma for Sears, Roebuck and Company, and for nearly 23 years filled several engineering and Six Sigma leadership roles in various locations with Honeywell International. His roles there included principal engineer; Total Quality advisor; manager, Process Improvement, Supply Management; and program manager/technical senior staff, Six Sigma Plus. Kubiak has received many awards, is frequently published in various journals and magazines, and is a sought-after presenter. Kubiak is an ASQ CQE, CRE, Certified Quality Manager, and SSBB. Donald W. Benbow is a partner of Iowa Quality Systems, and brings extensive teaching and training expertise to this collaboration. For 33 years, he taught college mathematics, statistics, engineering, and computer science courses. He has conducted lean manufacturing seminars, assisted in a Six Sigma project at John Deere Corporation, and developed software for process control applications for a subsidiary of Monsanto Corporation. Benbow is an ASQ certified CQI, CQA, CRE, and CQT.

Beneficial but not sufficient for passing CSSBB

Like many other folks, I recommend getting the Quality Council of Indiana CSSBB Primer if you want to pass the test. Primer does a much better and thorough job teaching challenging statistical concepts and calculations. That said, this books is was definitely beneficial for me in passing the CSSBB Exam:

1) Good test reference - unlike the primer had a decent glossary useful for exam
2) Does explain SIMPLER concepts quickly and efficiently - Primer is sometimes wordy and goes into concepts not mentioned in the BOK.
3) The supplemental CD-ROM has questions that were very similar in difficulty to the ACTUAL exam. So a more accurate baseline to gauge exam readiness. While the Primer blue page questions do ensure you understand the concepts well, it's much more in-depth than actual exam questions.

So if you can get this used for under $40 for a 3rd party I would suggest getting it. However, know the Primer would and should be your primary study resource.

Defective Product

This has to be the worst "instructional" book that I have ever purchased in my entire life. The way it explains things, wait that's too positive, the truth is that it doesn't explain anything; no explanation of theory, no thoughtful exploration of concepts, and a complete lack of clarity when the authors are attempting to explain something. It's as if the authors took a bunch of random information and graphs put it all inside of a word scrambler and then printed everything out and put a shiny hard cover on it; all the while laughing as order after order comes in. The "thoughtful" examples provided in this book are completely incoherent as if the authors had never interacted with another human before but were then asked to explain something. If you're looking for a good doorstop or are planning to host a book burning; then this book is definitely for you because it is truly the "money pit" of text books. The fact that an organization that prides itself in quality (ASQ) even put its seal of approval on this book is absolutely ridiculous to me. Do not waste your money on this book! However, if you are still interested my copy is currently for sale.

Good study companion, not good test companion

Do not buy this book as your go-to source for the ASQ Black Belt exam. As others have said, I too found this book to have numerous calculation gaffs, which makes it hard to know if you understand the concepts, b/c you can't verify your answers. Added to this complaint is the fact that the book is not the easiest to understand. The language is overly complex, and the examples (especially calculations) are not always explained in full. Without a complete explanation for the math, it can be very frustrating to study with. I would only recommend this as a companion to the Quality Council of Indiana's CSSBB Primer, and then only for prep. I did not use this book for the test AT ALL. Instead, I used the Primer, especially the index, and NO OTHER SOURCES, and passed the test on my first try.

Only an introduction for a beginner

If you've never picked up a torch or gun, this book is worth checking out. It is a reasonable introduction to major welding processes. But there are very few pages that describe in significant detail any particular welding process. Few figures/images in this black-and-white publication limit its usefulness. The type is a large font, margins are wide. In spite of a significant page count, the content is quite limited.

After you have laid your first bead of molten metal, you will rarely--if ever--crack this book open again.

Check out "How to Weld" by Todd Bridigum for a far more in-depth resource that you will use again and again.How To Weld (Motorbooks Workshop)

Does NOT talk about fluxcore welding!

"Explains each type of welding, including stick, tig, mig, and flux core welding". Yes, the book tells you what flux core welding is, devoting a total of 3 sentences to the technique. The author claims MIG is much more common, and thus ignores flux core altogether. I was under the misconception that this book covered ALL the basics. Perhaps MIG is more common in professional environments, but a basic wire feed welder is much cheaper than a full MIG setup AND more versatile in its portability and outdoor capabilities, so I suspect more beginners will actually find themselves with the basic wire feed welder first. I was really hoping to get a better understanding of the differences when using a fluxcore wire instead of a shielding gas, but that's not going to happen here.

An Amazing Work

Hong Kong Apothecary is a monumental work that presents the evolution and integration of traditional Chinese medicine, packaging art, Chinese philosophy, and regional history. The depth of Simon Go's understanding of his subject and his artful way of presenting it make this book highly informative and a great deal of fun. Just having the opportunity to see the rare examples of ephemeral history is alone well worth the cover price.
